BPDU Tunneling<br />

The Layer 2 Protocol Tunneling (L2PT) feature is only available on <strong>the</strong> E-<strong>Series</strong>: e<br />

By default, when VLAN Stacking is enabled, Spanning Tree BPDUs and o<strong>the</strong>r Layer 2 protocol data units<br />

are dropped. Such control frames use well-known MAC addresses, which, per IEEE guidelines, should be<br />

consumed by each device on which <strong>the</strong> frames are received.<br />

However, in some cases, <strong>the</strong>re is a need to transport that control traffic transparently through <strong>the</strong> core to<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r region. L2PT solves this issue by matching on <strong>the</strong> well-known MAC address and <strong>for</strong>warding <strong>the</strong><br />

frames to a local CPU, which in turn rewrites <strong>the</strong> MAC address to <strong>Force10</strong>'s unique MAC address<br />

(01-01-e8-00-00-00) and transmits <strong>the</strong> frame back into <strong>the</strong> VLAN-Stacking core. Since <strong>the</strong> frames now use<br />

<strong>Force10</strong>'s unique MAC address, <strong>the</strong>y are treated as normal data packets by o<strong>the</strong>r VLAN-Stacking core<br />

switches. At <strong>the</strong> egress customer-provider edge, <strong>the</strong> MAC address of <strong>the</strong> frames is again rewritten to <strong>the</strong><br />

original MAC address and <strong>for</strong>warded to <strong>the</strong> customer network.<br />

Important Points to Remember<br />

• STP, RSTP, and MSTP BPDUs are supported. (PVST+ is not supported.)<br />

Configuring a VLAN-Stack access port<br />

A VLAN-Stack access port can belong to only one VLAN-Stack VLAN.<br />

To configure an interface (port or LAG) as a VLAN-Stack access port, use <strong>the</strong>se commands:<br />
