ICMP<br />

For diagnostics, Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) provide routing in<strong>for</strong>mation to end stations by<br />

choosing <strong>the</strong> best route (ICMP redirect messages) or determining if a router is reachable (ICMP Echo or<br />

Echo Reply). ICMP Error messages in<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> router of problems in a particular packet. These messages<br />

are sent only on unicast traffic<br />

Use <strong>the</strong> following steps to configure ICMP:<br />

• Enable ICMP unreachable messages on page 324<br />

• Enable ICMP redirects on page 325<br />

See <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong> a complete listing of all commands related to ICMP.<br />

Enable ICMP unreachable messages<br />

EXEC privilege Clear <strong>the</strong> ARP caches <strong>for</strong> all interfaces or <strong>for</strong> a specific<br />

interface by entering <strong>the</strong> following in<strong>for</strong>mation:<br />

• For a 1-Gigabit E<strong>the</strong>rnet interface, enter <strong>the</strong><br />

keyword GigabitE<strong>the</strong>rnet followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/port<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For a port channel interface, enter <strong>the</strong> keyword<br />

port-channel followed by a number from 1 to 255<br />

<strong>for</strong> TeraScale, 1 to 32 <strong>for</strong> E<strong>the</strong>rScale.<br />

• For a SONET interface, enter <strong>the</strong> keyword sonet<br />

followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/port in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For a 10-Gigabit E<strong>the</strong>rnet interface, enter <strong>the</strong><br />

keyword TenGigabitE<strong>the</strong>rnet followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/<br />

port in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For a VLAN interface, enter <strong>the</strong> keyword vlan<br />

followed by a number between 1 and 4094.<br />

ip ip-address (OPTIONAL) Enter <strong>the</strong> keyword ip followed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> IP address of <strong>the</strong> ARP entry you wish to clear.<br />

no-refresh (OPTIONAL) Enter <strong>the</strong> keyword no-refresh<br />

to delete <strong>the</strong> ARP entry from CAM. Or use this option with<br />

interface or ip ip-address to specify which dynamic ARP<br />

entries you want to delete.<br />

Note: Transit traffic may not be <strong>for</strong>warded during <strong>the</strong> period<br />

when deleted ARP entries are resolved again and re-installed<br />

in CAM. Use this option with extreme caution.<br />

By default, ICMP unreachable messages are disabled. When enabled ICMP unreachable messages are<br />

created and sent out all interfaces. To disable ICMP unreachable messages, use <strong>the</strong> no ip unreachable<br />

command.<br />
