Chapter 18 High Availability
High Availability is supported only on platforms: c e
This chapter is divided in to the following sections:
• High Availability on the E-Series on page 367
• High Availabilty on C-Series on page 378
• Hitless Feature Definition on page 383
High Availability on the E-Series
The Force10 Networks E-Series line cards, SFMs, and RPMs can be hotswapped.
Online Insertion and Removal (OIR)
In the E-Series, you add, replace, or remove a line card, the redundant SFM or the Standby RPM without
interrupting the system. While the system is online, you can replace a blank filler panel with a line card or
hot swap a line card of the same type.
This section covers the following topics:
• Line Cards on page 367
• SFMs on page 370
• Standby RPM on page 371
Line Cards
When you insert a line card into an empty slot in a system that is in operation, the software detects the line
card type, and then writes the line card information into the running-config. The running-config file keeps
the information, even if the line card is removed from the slot. If a line card is removed or failed, FTOS
will make the line card configuration logic and retain the configuration in running-config. Such logical
configuration needs to be saved into startup-config to survive a system reboot.
To better control traffic during a line card hotswap, shut down all interfaces on the line card, using the
shutdown command.
