When an interface is in ei<strong>the</strong>r mode, you receive an error message if you try to configure a command that<br />

must be in <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r mode. For example, in Figure 156, <strong>the</strong> command ip address triggered an error<br />

message because <strong>the</strong> interface is in Layer 2 mode and <strong>the</strong> ip address command is a Layer 3 command.<br />

Physical Interfaces<br />

10/100/1000 E<strong>the</strong>rnet, Gigabit E<strong>the</strong>rnet and 10 Gigabit E<strong>the</strong>rnet interfaces are supported on plat<strong>for</strong>ms:<br />

Error message<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r interface, found on <strong>the</strong> Route Processor Module (RPM) of <strong>the</strong> C-<strong>Series</strong> and E-<strong>Series</strong>, is <strong>the</strong><br />

Management E<strong>the</strong>rnet interface. This interface type is Fast E<strong>the</strong>rnet and provides dedicated management<br />

access to <strong>the</strong> system. The S-<strong>Series</strong> systems supported by <strong>FTOS</strong> do not have this dedicated management<br />

interface, but you can use any E<strong>the</strong>rnet port configured with an IP address and route.<br />
