configure access to an SNMP community<br />

You enable SNMP when you configure <strong>the</strong> community string to be used by <strong>the</strong> SNMP manager and agent.<br />

Without <strong>the</strong> community string set, you cannot query SNMP data.<br />

To configure <strong>the</strong> SNMP community string, use <strong>the</strong> following command in <strong>the</strong> CONFIGURATION mode:<br />

snmp-server community<br />

community-string {ro | rw}<br />

[security-name name [access name]]<br />

To view <strong>the</strong> SNMP configuration, use <strong>the</strong> show running-config snmp command (Figure 38) in <strong>the</strong> EXEC<br />

privilege mode.<br />

configure <strong>the</strong> system to send SNMP notifications<br />

CONFIGURATION Enter a community string that both <strong>the</strong> SNMP<br />

manager and agent understand. Configure <strong>the</strong><br />

following parameters:<br />

• community-string: some community strings<br />

are: community; public<br />

• ro: read-only<br />

• rw: read-write<br />

• security-name: (Optional) Enter <strong>the</strong> keyword<br />

followed by <strong>the</strong> security name as defined by <strong>the</strong><br />

community MIB.<br />

• access- name: (Optional) Enter <strong>the</strong> standard<br />

access list name (a string up to 16 characters<br />

long).<br />

SNMP traps can be collected and sent to an SNMP host (manager). Traps are not saved on <strong>the</strong> system, so to<br />

analyze <strong>the</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation collected in <strong>the</strong> traps, you should have <strong>the</strong> traps sent to a device or <strong>the</strong> SNMP<br />

manager. You can configure up to 16 SNMP hosts.<br />
