specify logging to a Syslog server
By default, all system messages are stored in the logging internal buffer and Syslog servers. You can add
external devices and change the settings for storing messages in an internal buffer.
To specify different Syslog servers on the system, use the following command in the CONFIGURATION
mode:
Command Syntax Command Mode Purpose
logging {ip-address | hostname} CONFIGURATION Configure a Syslog server to receive log messages
from the system. Enter the IP address or host name
of the server.
You can configure up to eight Syslog servers to store
system messages.
To view any changes made, use the show running-config logging command (Figure 27) in the EXEC
privilege mode.
change logging settings
You can change the default settings of the system logging by changing the severity level and the storage
location. The default is to log all messages up to debug level, that is, all system messages. By changing the
severity level in the logging commands, you control the number of system messages logged.
To change one of the settings for logging system messages, use any or all of the following commands in
the CONFIGURATION mode:

logging buffered [level] [size] CONFIGURATION Specify the minimum severity level and number of
the system messages logged to an internal buffer.
Configure the following optional parameters:
• level range: 0 to 7 or one of the following
message levels (emergencies, alerts, critical,
errors, warning, notifications, informational, or
debugging)
• size range: 40960 to 524288 bytes.
The default setting is size 40960 and level 7. To
return to the default setting, enter default logging
buffered.
When you decrease the buffer size, all messages
stored in the buffer are lost. Increasing the buffer
size does not affect messages stored in the buffer.
