Enabling an interface<br />

To determine which physical interfaces are available, use <strong>the</strong> show running-config command in <strong>the</strong> EXEC<br />

mode. This command displays all physical interfaces available on <strong>the</strong> E-<strong>Series</strong> line cards (Figure 157).<br />

As soon as you determine <strong>the</strong> type of physical interfaces, you must enter <strong>the</strong> INTERFACE mode to enable<br />

and configure <strong>the</strong> interfaces.<br />

To enter <strong>the</strong> INTERFACE mode, use <strong>the</strong>se commands in <strong>the</strong> following sequence, starting in <strong>the</strong><br />

CONFIGURATION mode:<br />

1 interface interface CONFIGURATION Enter <strong>the</strong> keyword interface followed by <strong>the</strong> type of<br />

interface and slot/port in<strong>for</strong>mation:<br />

• For a 10/100/1000 E<strong>the</strong>rnet interface, enter <strong>the</strong><br />

keyword GigabitE<strong>the</strong>rnet followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/port<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For a Gigabit E<strong>the</strong>rnet interface, enter <strong>the</strong> keyword<br />

GigabitE<strong>the</strong>rnet followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/port in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For <strong>the</strong> Management interface on <strong>the</strong> RPM, enter <strong>the</strong><br />

keyword ManagementE<strong>the</strong>rnet followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/<br />

port in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For a SONET interface, enter <strong>the</strong> keyword sonet<br />

followed by slot/port in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

• For a 10 Gigabit E<strong>the</strong>rnet interface, enter <strong>the</strong> keyword<br />

TenGigabitE<strong>the</strong>rnet followed by <strong>the</strong> slot/port<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

ppp command to enable PPP encapsulation. After<br />

encapsulation is enabled, enter no shutdown to enable<br />

<strong>the</strong> interface.<br />
