Seoungho Cho
Es gibt viele Aspekte des Schauens, die die Erfahrung eines Bildes subjektiv machen. Seoungho Cho hebt einige der
wichtigsten hervor, unterschlägt dagegen andere, ebenso wichtige, kategorisch. Wir bekommen weder eine Geschichte
geboten, noch einen Kontext, noch eine umfassende Farbpalette, kein ›Ganzes‹ und keine ›Dinge‹. Diese Einschränkungen
ermöglichen ihm, die Art und Weise des Schauens als Handlung an sich zu betrachten. ›WS.2‹ hat einen
beweglichen Rahmen, mit Hilfe dessen der Zuschauer mit der Funktionsweise des Auges, des Lichts, der Entfernung,
von Raum und Spiegelung vertraut gemacht wird, und ihrer jeweiligen Entsprechungen bei den Funktionen der
Kamera, mit Aufnahme und Projektion. Das Bild, das sich in bestimmten Momenten verschiebt, beeinflusst unsere
räumliche Wahrnehmung. Dies führt zu einem Gefühl von Transposition, als würde man nach etwas suchen - wie
wenn man hinter dem Fenster eines Fahrzeugs fährt, das von einem anderen gesteuert wird - erst vorwärts, dann
wieder rückwärts, als gäbe es hinter einem etwas, auf das man zurückblicken muss.
Seoungho Cho, *1959 in Seoul, Süd-Korea. Er machte einen BA- und MA-Abschluss in Graphischem Design an der
Hong-Ik-Universität in Korea, und einen MA-Abschluss in Video-Kunst an der New York University. 1998 erhielt er ein
Media-Arts-Stipendium der Rockefeller Foundation, und 2003 ein Stipendium der Jerome Foundation. Beim 18.
Annual Black Maria Film- und Videofestival erhielt er die ›Juror's Citation‹ und den International Award for Video
Art von der ZKM. Chos Ein-Mann-Shows zeigte er u. a. im Museum of Modern Art, New York, in der Philip Feldman
Gallery, Oregon, im Contemporary Art Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii und im Pusan Metropolitan Museum of Art, Korea.
Seine Arbeit wurde auf zahlreichen internationalen Festivals und Ausstellungen gezeigt.
There are many aspects of the act of looking that make the experience of an image subjective. Seoungho Cho highlights a few of the
important ones and emphatically omits various others that are also important. We are not offered any narrative, context or extensive
colour palette, no ›whole‹, no ›things‹. These restrictions enable him largely to determine the viewer's way of looking as an action in
itself. ›WS.2‹ has a moving framework, which allows the viewer to become conscious of the workings of the eye, of light, distance, space
and reflection, and the analogies of these with the camera, registration and projection. The image, shifting at well-chosen moments, causes
changes in our spatial experience. This leads to a feeling of transposition, of looking for something - like travelling behind the window
of a vehicle being driven by someone else - forwards, then backwards again, as if there has to be a reason to look back at something.
Seoungho Cho, *1959 in Seoul, South Korea. He received his B.A. and M.A. in Graphic Arts from Hong-Ik University, Korea, and
an M.A. in video art from New York University. In 1998 he received a Rockefeller Foundation Media Arts Fellowship and in 2003 he
received a Jerome Foundation grant. He has received the ›Juror's Citation‹ at the 18th Annual Black Maria Film and Video Festival as
well as the International Award for Video Art from ZKM. Cho's one-person exhibitions have included The Museum of Modern Art, New
York; The Philip Feldman Gallery, Oregon; the Contemporary Art Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Pusan Metropolitan Museum of
Art, Korea. His work has been shown in numerous international festivals and exhibitions.
