Das Band zieht eine Parallele zu den zwei Seiten schwulen Auftretens: David Zorros Performance
als der verdammte Filipino-Houseboy in John Hustons Film von 1967 ›Reflections in a Golden
Eye‹ und der heutigen schwulen Praxis des Barebacking. Diese ausgefallene Nebeneinanderstellung
untersucht das Kodieren des Schwul-Seins als ›gesetzlose Sexualität‹ und wie eine solche
Kodierung unbeabsichtigt das konventionelle Verständnis von Rasse, Geschlecht und Sexualität
verstärkt.
Nguyen Tan Hoang (*1970) ist ein schwuler vietnamesisch-amerikanischer Filmemacher,
Künstler, Autor und Aids-Aktivist. Nguyen interessiert sich bei seinen Forschungen vor allem für
die Darstellung asiatisch-amerikanischer Männlichkeit in schwuler Pornografie, in Hollywoodund
internationalen Produktionen. Nguyen Tan Hoang ist sowohl ein akademischer als auch ein
experimenteller Filmemacher, dessen Arbeiten auf Festivals in den Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada,
Hongkong und in Europa gezeigt wurden. Nguyens künstlerische Absicht ist eine politische: eine
populäre Kultur für asiatisch-amerikanische Schwule zu schaffen. Nguyen benutzt oft in
Beschlag genommenes Filmmaterial, kombiniert Persiflage, Kitsch und Musikbezüge, um von seinem
schwulen Standpunkt heraus zu sprechen.
The tape draws a parallel between two sites of queer visibility: David Zorro's performance as the flaming Filipino
houseboy in John Huston's 1967 film, Reflections in a Golden Eye, and the contemporary practice of gay
barebacking. This odd juxtaposition interrogates the coding of queerness as ›outlaw sexuality‹ and how such a
coding inadvertently reinforces conventional understandings of race, gender, and sexuality.
Nguyen Tan Hoang (*1970) is a gay Vietnamese-American film-maker, artist, author and AIDS activist.
Nguyen's own research interests include representations of Asian-American masculinity in gay male pornography
and Hollywood and international cinemas. Nguyen Tan Hoang is both an academic and an experimental filmmaker
whose creative work has been featured in festivals in the U.S., Canada, Hong Kong and Europe. Nguyen's
artistic agenda is a political one: to create a popular culture for Gay Asian Americans. Nguyen often uses appropriated
film footage, combining pastiche, kitsch film and music references to speak of his queer positionality.
