FILM FOR TOM

Eine lyrische Hommage an einen Freund und seinen prägenden Einfluss. Tom ist beredsam und überschwänglich,
doch er findet keine Lösung für die Probleme, die ihn belasten. Aber zu wem spricht er - hält er einen Vortrag? Eine
dramatische Handlung, die sich im Off abspielt, erschwert unsere Wahrnehmung des häuslichen Raumes. Der Film
basiert auf einer Aufnahme von Tom, die ein Jahr vor seinem Tod entstanden ist. Er war sehr an Politik interessiert
und konnte sich dafür begeistern. Der Film entstand als Suche nach einer mitfühlenden Art und Weise, die Fragen,
die er aufwirft, offen zu lassen. Tom war mal ein begeisterter Fotograf, und einige seiner Aufnahmen wurden im
Film verwendet, aber es gab keine Fotos aus seiner Kindheit. Der Film beschäftigt sich zum Teil mit der Frage nach
der Information, die einem zur Verfügung steht, um das Porträt eines Lebens zu schaffen.
Stephen Connolly: Meine Filmarbeit geht auf geschichtliche Untersuchungen und die Erforschung der heutigen
Wirkung von öffentlichen Plätzen zurück, zum Beispiel von Parks, Büchereien, Stränden und Gedenkstätten. Die
Spannung in den Filmen entsteht dadurch, dass die politische und repräsentative Bedeutung der Orte mit ihrer banalen
Funktion innerhalb des sozialen Stadtbildes verschmilzt. In letzter Zeit bringe ich in meine Filme immer häufiger
dokumentarische Elemente ein, die sich während der Produktion als wahre Glücksgriffe erweisen.
A lyrical homage to a friend and formative influence. Tom is eloquent and effusive, yet finds no resolution to issues that haunt him.
Yet to whom is he speaking - is it a lecture? And in the film a dramatic offscreen event complicates our apprehension of a domestic space.
The film is structured by a recording I made of Tom speaking a year before he died. He was extremely interested and inspired by politics -
and the film was made as a search for a sympathetic form that leaves the questions he poses open. At times in his life Tom had been an
enthusiastic photographer - some of his photographs have been used in the film - yet there were no images of his childhood. In part the
film is a consideration of the information available to construct a picture of a life.
Stephen Connolly: My film work stems from an investigation into the histories, as well as contemporary resonances, of public
place - parks, libraries, beaches and sites of monuments, for instance. Often a tension arises in the films as each site's political or institutional
meanings converge with its apparently banal form and function within a social landscape. Recently a number of my films have
incorporated documentary elements enabling a degree of serendipity during production.
