Morro Bay, Kalifornien ist ein kleines touristisches Küstenstädtchen.<br />
Bekannt ist es vor allem durch den Morro Rock, ein ›Vulkanstöpsel‹, der an<br />
der Öffnung der Bucht liegt. Alle Postkarten von Morro Bay haben einen<br />
Rahmen, der das häßliche Kraftwerk mit seinen drei hoch aufragenden<br />
Kühltürmen, welches nur ein paar hundert Meter vom Felsen entfernt liegt,<br />
verbirgt. Dieser Film versucht das Kraftwerk wieder in den rechten Rahmen<br />
zu rücken, so dass wir beginnen, über die Bedeutung des Kontrastes zwischen<br />
diesen beiden nebeneinander liegenden massiven Objekte nachzudenken.<br />
Roger Beebe ist Assistenzprofessor in Film und Medien an der University<br />
of Florida. Er hat seine bisherigen Filme an der McMurdo Station in der<br />
Antarktis und am CBS Jumbotron am Times Square sowie an unzähligen<br />
weniger exotischer Lokalitäten (Rotterdam, NY Expo, Cinematexas, Ann<br />
Arbor usw.) gezeigt. Er betrieb auch von 1997 bis 2000 Flicker in Chapel Hill<br />
und ist zur Zeit künstlerischer Leiter von FLEX, dem Florida Experimental<br />
Film/Video Festival.<br />
Morro Bay, California is a little coastal tourist town known mostly for the Morro<br />
Rock, a volcanic plug that sits at the mouth of the Bay. In all the postcards of Morro Bay,<br />
the image is framed so that you can¹t tell that just beyond the edge of the postcard, maybe<br />
a few hundred yards from the Rock, is a gargantuan power plant with 3 towering smoke<br />
stacks. This film tries to restore the power plant to the frame, so that we can start thinking<br />
about what the juxtaposition of these two massive objects might mean.<br />
Roger Beebe is an assistant professor of film and media studies at the University of<br />
Florida. He has shown his previous films and videos at McMurdo Station in Antarctica<br />
and on the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square as well as at scores of less exotic locales (Rotterdam,<br />
NY Expo, Cinematexas, Ann Arbor, etc.). He also ran Flicker in Chapel Hill from<br />
1997-2000 and is currently artistic director of FLEX, the Florida Experimental Film/Video<br />
