Drei Jahre zur Herstellung, gedreht in vier Ländern,
ist ›A Girl Named Kai‹ eine mutige und ehrliche autobiographische
Vignette in drei Teilen über Kai Lings Beziehungen,
Selbstentdeckungen, Leidenschaften, Geheimnissen
und Träumen. Dieser experimentelle, digital überarbeitete
Super 8 bzw. 16-mm-Film nimmt mit auf eine
echte Lebensreise von den Höhen der Liebe bis zu den
Tiefen des Verlustes, fein durch Originalmusik miteinander
verwoben. ›A Girl...‹ möchte die vorgefasste Meinung
unserer Gesellschaft über Menschen, von denen man
annimmt, dass sie ›Außenseiter‹ sind, herausfordern.
Gleichzeitig will er ermutigen, zeitgemäße Vorstellungen
innerer und äußerer sozialer Identitäten zu ergründen.
Kai Ling Xue wurde in Hualien, Taiwan geboren und
zog 1997 nach Vancouver, um ihren Traum, eine interdisziplinäre
Künstlerin zu werden, zu erfüllen. Ihre Arbeit
erforscht Frauenrechte, Rasse und Sexualität. Ihre Arbeiten
wurden auf Festivals und Biennalen in Asien, Europa,
den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada gezeigt.
Three years in the making, shot in four countries, ›A Girl
Named Kai‹ is a brave and honest autobiographical vignette in
three chapters about Kai Ling's relationships, self discoveries, passions,
secrets and dreams. Using digitally-edited Super 8 and
16mm, this experimental short will take you through a true life
journey from the highs of love to the lows of loss, delicately
threaded together with original music. ›A Girl...‹ sets out to challenge
our society's preconceptions of people who are considered
›outsiders‹ while empowering the audience to continue to examine
contemporary notions of internal and external social identities.
Kai Ling Xue was born in Hualien, Taiwan and moved to
Vancouver in 1997 to pursue her dream of becoming an interdisciplinary
artist. Her work explores women's issues, race and sexuality.
Her work has been shown at festivals and Biennales in Asia,
Europe, the US and Canada.

Als ein einfacher Reinigungsjob sich in einen Alptraum
verwandelt, wird klar, dass der Hausbesuch in
›Filth‹ nicht so abläuft, wie geplant. Eine pixilierte
Geschichte, die sowohl die Handlung im Film und die
Handlung auf dem Film verbindet.
Wrik Mead tauchte über die Jahre als der auffälligste
der kanadischen experimentellen Filmemacher auf.
Seine Filme neigen zur Psycho-Dramatik, sie sind Ich-
Erzählungen voller Verlangen und Entgegenkommen. Sie
sind eine Mischung aus sorgfältiger Pixilation, märchenhafter
Allegorien und eigenartiger Identität. Sie
beschäftigen sich mit der Stofflichkeit und der Taktilität
des Filmes selber. Meads fantastische Erzählungen bieten
provokative, hässliche/schöne, oft verunsichernde
Einblicke in Verlangen und Sehnsucht, Isolation und
Beschränkung, Ritual und Veränderung. 1997 wurde auf
dem Images Festival of Independent Film & Video in
Toronto eine Retrospektive seiner Arbeit gezeigt.
The housecall in ›Filth‹ doesn't go quite as planned when a simple
cleaning job becomes a nightmare. A pixilated tale which combines
both the action in the film and the action on the film.
Wrik Mead has emerged over the years as one of Canada's
most distinctive experimental filmmakers. His films are psychodramatic
by inclination, first-person narratives of desire and
accommodation. They are a mix of painstaking pixilation, fairytale
allegory and queer identity, and are preoccupied with the
materiality and tactility of film itself. Mead's fantasy narratives
offer provocative, ugly/beautiful, often unsettling explorations of
desire and longing, isolation and confinement, ritual and transformation.
In 1997, a retrospective of his work was presented at the
Images Festival of Independent Film & Video in Toronto.
