Semiconductor
Semiconductor haben die northumbrische Landschaft reanimiert und dabei Aufnahmen aus
dem Archiv des British Geological Survey in Edinburgh verwendet. Diese Daten lokaler und weiter
entfernt auftretender seismischer Störungen wurden in Klang verwandelt und dazu benutzt,
die sich ständig wandelnde Geographie um uns herum zum Leben zu erwecken.
Wir folgen der Bewegung des Klangs, wie er von der Küste bei Cocklawburn zu den Hügeln der
Cheviots wandert und das Land verändert. Wir reisen zu Abb's Head und beobachten Erdlichter,
die durch den seismischen Klang sichtbar werden. Es heißt, sie kommen zustande durch tektonische
Bewegungen in den tieferen Erdschichten. Licht und Elektrizität blitzen auf, wenn Kristalle
durch Bewegung zusammengedrückt werden, und lassen leuchtende Objekte erkennen, deren
Bewegung mit der Richtung der Risse in der Erde korrespondiert.
Semiconductor, gegründet 1997, sind: Ruth Jarman, *1973 in Fareham. Vorstandsmitglied
von Lighthouse, Brighton 2002-2004. Joseph Gerhardt, *1972 in Oxford. Lebt und arbeitet in
Brighton. Semiconductors Sound Filme beschäftigen sich mit vielfältigen Prozessen digitaler Animation
und bei der Gelegenheit entdecken sie unsere physikalische Welt im Fluss; Städte in
Bewegung, sich bewegende Landschaften und Symsteme im Chaos.
Semiconductor have reanimated Northumbria's epic landscape using data recordings from the archives at the
British Geological Survey in Edinburgh. This data of local and distant seismic disturbances has been converted to
sound and used to reveal and bring to life the constantly shifting geography around us.
We follow the motion of the sound as it travels from the coast at Cocklawburn to the hills of The Cheviots,
transforming the land. We travel to Abb's Head and witness Earth Lights, made visible by the seismic sounds.
These phenomena are said to be the result of tectonic movement in the strata below us. Flashes of light and electricity
are produced as movement squeezes mineral crystals together, displaying luminous objects whose motion
coincides with the direction of ruptures within the earth.

and, by way of these, reveal our physical world in flux; cities in motion, shifting landscapes and systems in
chaos.
