›Fountain‹ geht dem filmischen Realismus auf den Grund und zeigt, wie handlungsarm zwischenmenschliche
Begegnungen sind. In der Aneinanderreihung von Momenten mit Menschen, die sich über einen Zeitraum von zwanzig
Jahren Cummings Kamera gestellt haben, lässt ›Fountain‹ den Zufall und das Absurde unsere Eindrücke beherrschen.
Das Geschichtenerzählen bleibt dabei auf der Strecke.
›Fountain presst die Geschichte aus meiner Arbeit heraus. Das Geschichtenerzählen hat seine Zeit gehabt. Wir werden
überhäuft mit verführerischen Geschichten und starken Gefühlen, die überdecken, wie schlimm es um unsere
zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen steht. In Fountain sollen kurze Fragmente von Bild und Ton die filmische Realitäts-Wirkung
unterwandern, auf die wir alle hereinfallen.‹ Donigan Cumming
Donigan Cumming ist ein Künstler, der Fotografie, Video, Ton und Text in Multi-Media-Installationen einsetzt.
2005 wurde eine Übersicht über Cummings Arbeit in den verschiedenen Medien unter dem Titel ›Moving Pictures‹
von der Kuratorin Peggy Gale am Museum für Zeitgenössische Kanadische Kunst gezeigt. Die DVD-Sammlung ›Donigan
Cumming: Controlled Disturbance (Kontrollierte Störung)‹ ergänzte die Ausstellung. Cummings Arbeit wurde
zum dauerhaften Bestandteil der Sammlungen des Museums für Moderne Kunst in New York, des Kanadischen
Museums für Zeitgenössische Fotografie (Ottawa), des Europäischen Hauses für Fotografie (Paris), des Elysée-
Museums (Lausanne), des Museums für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Los Angeles und vieler anderer Nationalmuseen in
Belgien, Großbritannien, Kanada, Dänemark, Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien, der Schweiz und den USA. Seine
Arbeit wurde mit Stipendien für Visuelle Künste des Canada Council for the Arts und des Conseil des arts et des lettres
du Québec gefördert, und er erhielt Forschungsstipendien des National Endowment for the Arts und der Guggenheim-Stiftung.
Cutting to the core of cinematic realism, Fountain presents the plot-less character of human encounters. In a string of moments with
the people who have presented themselves to Cumming's camera for over twenty years, Fountain allows the accidental and the absurd to
dominate our impressions. Storytelling is evacuated in the process.
›Fountain squeezes the storytelling out of my work. Storytelling has run its course. We are overwhelmed with stories whose seductive
plots and strong emotions camouflage the dangerous state of human relations. In Fountain, short fragments of image and sound are
intended to subvert the cinematic effect of reality which makes fools of us all.‹ (Donigan Cumming)
Donigan Cumming is an artist who uses photography, video, sound, and text in multi-media installations. In 2005, a survey of
Cumming's work in various media curated by Peggy Gale, entitled Moving Pictures, was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian
Art. The DVD collection Donigan Cumming: Controlled Disturbance complements that exhibition. Cumming's work has been acquired
for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (Ottawa),
the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), the Musee de L'Élysée (Lausanne), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles),
and by national museums in Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. His work
has been supported by senior visual arts grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. He
has been a fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation.
