HOCHSCHULTAG / UNIVERSITY OPEN DAY - UDK BERLIN
INSTITUTE OF TIME-BASED MEDIA, MEDIA ART CLASS
Artistic research into the structuring of time in and with the use of technical media is the field of work covered
in Prof. Maria Vedder's Media Art Class, whereby a particular focus is placed on video art. In the foreground of
this work is the creative use and the critical analysis of video, installation and multimedia, with the aim of creating
an autonomous artistic project. This can either be meant as the production of an individual work of art or
equally the artistic creation of everyday culture. The projects carried out in recent semesters reflect this working
approach: media façades and video installations for Opel's Berlin Communication Centre (printed catalogue),
video lounges and media façades for real and fictitious places in Berlin (printed catalogue and DVD), electronic
stage sets and media performances for the exhibition USE (printed catalogue and video), spatial installations with
light and video for the exhibition LUX (printed catalogue), experimental shorts for the TV channel ARTE. The
Media Art Class is closely associated with the other classes at the Institute of Time-Based Media (IZM). The institute
is a crystalisation core of media-related artistic research and teaching at the Universität der Künste Berlin.
The whole range of time-based media can be found under its auspices: artistic work with video and film, media
installations and productions, interactive systems, digital media designs, multimedia art and innovative programme
design. The overall aim of the degree could be summarised as training ›artistic authors in and with
media‹.
