ROSES AND FALL
Bea de Visser
YOUNG LIONS
Eva Drangsholt
People think I am insane. I am not mad. I am Nijinski. I dance.
I think so. I am God...
›Roses And Fall‹ is a short strong image of beauty that like a
bolt from the blue merges with madness. The visual materials are
what they are, of raw glow to support the performance. A few
lines from the Diary of Vassily Nijinski guide us through a stage of
mental decay that delivers a touch of muddle and emotion.
Bea de Visser studied Design of Public Spaces and Painting,
and left the Academy of Visual Art, Amsterdam to study Electro-
Acoustic Sound. She started her career as a performing artist,
went on stage making sound works and live installations. She then
turned back to painting, followed by two years of residency at the
Rijsakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1993-1994).
She works within a framework ranging from an artist initiative to
a well-established museum, but also the public space, the theatre
and the cinema come within the scope of her work.
in Norwegen. 2002-2003: Berufskunstschule in Oslo, Norwegen.
Nationalen Kunstakademie Bergen.
›Young Lions‹ is a dramatization of the Black Metal musician
Varg Vikernes' description of the murder that he in 1993 was sentenced
to 21 years in prison for committing. The film is an attempt
to break with the often explanative visual presentations of narrative
films. In Young Lions traditional re-enactments have been
replaced by exterior shots of a block of flats where the murder
could have taken place, intermixed with filmic details intended to
portray the experiences of the victim as the assassination progressed.
›The blade was not sharp. It was so blunt I wouldn't have
been able to cut a tomato in two with it without crushing it
instead. The only way to kill him quickly with that knife would be
to pierce his heart or skull.‹
