›Cosmetic Emergency‹ untersucht das Schönheitskonzept mit Hilfe einer Zusammenstellung
lyrischer Animationen und Liveaufnahmen. Als Film-Essay über den heutigen Trend des Schönheitswahns
und die Unsterblichkeit der Malerei, sucht es nach dem, ›was im Inneren ist‹.
Schlagzeilen (z. B. bietet das US-Militär Schönheitsoperationen unentgeltlich an) und Musikfilmsequenzen
werden mit Glasmal-Animation, gefundenem Filmmaterial und Dokumentartechniken
geschaffen. Die für den Film in Auftrag gegebene Musik wurde vom neuseeländischen Hip-Hop-
Künstler Coco Solid und dem Gründer von Half Japanese Jad Fair, dem britischen Radiokünstler
Mick Hobbs und der Trombonistin Hilary Jeffery bereitgestellt. Es ist auch ein seltener Auftritt
der niederländischen Botschafterin für Schönheitsoperationen Marijke Helwegen dabei.
Martha Colburn, *1971 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, studierte am Maryland Institute College
of Art in Baltimore. Sie ist Autodidaktin als Filmemacherin und hat in den letzten acht Jahren
über 40 animierte und found-footage-Filme gemacht. Ihre Werke sind überall ausgestrahlt worden,
von Höhlen in Frankreich bis zum Museum of Modern Art in New York. Sie wohnt jetzt in
Amsterdam, lehrt Animationsfilm und stellt ihre Kunst und Filme in internationalen Ausstellungen
und auf Festivals vor.
›Cosmetic Emergency‹ explores the idea of beauty through a collage of lyrical animations and live action. A film
essay on the current trend of cosmetic obsession and the immortal quality of painting, the film searches for
›what's on the inside‹. Topical news stories (such as the US military offering free cosmetic surgery) and musical
film sequences are created with paint-on-glass animation, found footage and documentary techniques. The music
commissioned for the film was created by New Zealand's Hip-Hop artist, Coco Solid and Half Japanese founder
Jad Fair, British radio artist Mick Hobbs and trombonist Hilary Jeffery. Also included is a rare appearance by the
Dutch Ambassador of Cosmetic Surgery, Marijke Helwegen.
Martha Colburn, *1971 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in
Baltimore. She is a self-taught filmmaker and has made over 40 animated and found footage films in the past 8
years. Her work has screened everywhere from caves in France to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Now
based in Amsterdam, she teaches animation film,and is exhibiting her art and films in International exhibition
and screening venues.
