EUROPEAN MEDIA ART FESTIVAL
Since its foundation in 1988, the European Media Art Festival (EMAF) has enjoyed great international renown,
acceptance and resonance in Osnabrück. The festival is one of the most ambitious German cultural events in the
field of media. We at nordmedia, the media society of the states of Lower Saxony and Bremen, are proud that this
innovative media art festival originated in Lower Saxony and - with the help of continuous funding - has developed
into what it is today: an important forum for presentation and communication among international artists
which, year on year, manages to unite relevant and fresh positions of contemporary media art into a festival.
The spectrum of the festival's contributions is manifold and multifarious. Every year an international selection
of film and video productions are screened, many of which are shown for the first time in Germany. A new element
this year is the series of children's films ›European Shorties‹ with shorts and animation films for children
from the age of three, and the film programme ›Media Art for Beginners‹, aimed at those who are prepared to let
themselves in for films that go a step beyond where the Cinema Arthouse generally ends.
The exhibition in the Kunsthalle Dominikanerkirche always forms the heart of the festival. In 2006 such outstanding
media artists as Bjørn Melhus, Matthias Müller, Corinna Schnitt and Pipilotti Rist will be presenting
their new works. Under this year's EMAF motto ›Smart Art‹ visitors will see kinetic objects, robots, installations
and performances that, in a playful or provocative manner, question social conventions by removing established
elements from their familiar context and thus track down everyday curiosities.
A major component of the EMAF is its annual congress that highlights current trends in media art. This year
international experts will discuss the history and future of media art under the title ›From Paik to iPod‹. One of
the participants is Prof. Dr. Wulf Herzogenrath, Director of the Kunsthalle Bremen and initiator of the exhibition
project ›40jahrevideokunst.de‹, currently on show in Bremen, Düsseldorf, Munich, Leipzig and Karlsruhe. A lecture
by Christian Hieber from Stuttgart is dedicated to the current phenomenon of the iPod and podcasting, and
Prof. Zhang Ga from Beijing/New York will report on the state of video and media art in China.
Last but not least, the StudentForum, an important forum for young creative artists, is a small festival within
the large EMAF. This year's co-operation partner of the StudentForum, which is always organised by students, is
the Merz-Akademie Stuttgart.
A funding partnership between the nordmedia and the EMAF has existed for many years now. We are delighted
about this and are pleased to be able to provide major support to this unique cultural event in 2006.
We wish the organisers success with the 19th realisation of their festival, we hope the EMAF runs smoothly
and that its many guests and visitors enjoy an edifying and informative festival in Osnabrück.
