Bahlay Kehlay ist das Ergebnis einer Rucksack-Reise
durch Westafrika mit einer Bolex Kamera. Vor allem in
den Sahara-Staaten Afrikas sind das traditionelle Handtrommeln
und der Tanz feste Bestandteile innerhalb der
vielen Kulturen der Region. Diese Rhythmen beschränken
sich nicht allein auf die Musik. In Westafrika
gelingt es dem Rhythmus die gesamte Bevölkerung in
allen Bereichen des täglichen Lebens zu durchdringen.
Der Titel stammt von einem traditionellen Lied aus der
nördlichen Region Ghanas. Das Handtrommeln ist eine
Interpretation eines traditionellen Rhythmus, der ebenfalls
aus Nord-Ghana stammt. Per Hand entwickelt und
eingefärbt.
Rob Haacke stammt ursprünglich aus Pinawa, Manitoba,
empfängt seine Post jetzt in Winnipeg, aber verbringt
einen Großteil seiner Zeit in anderen Teilen der
Welt, entweder um Geld zu verdienen, oder als Tourist.
Bahlay Kehlay is the result of a back-packing trip through West
Africa with a Bolex camera. In sub-Sahara Africa especially, traditional
hand drumming and dancing is deeply embedded within the
many cultures of the region. These rhythms are not restricted to
just music. In West Africa rhythm manages to permeate through
all of the population into all aspects of daily life. The title comes
from a traditional song that originates in the northern region of
Ghana. The hand drumming is an interpretation of a traditional
rhythm also from northern Ghana. Processed and tinted by hand.
Rob Haacke, originally from Pinawa, Manitoba, now
receives his mail in Winnipeg but spends good chunks of time in
other parts of the world either earning money or being a tourist.

Die Stars von MTV sind anscheinend nicht nur begnadete
Sänger (...) sondern auch durchtrainierte Athleten,
sie springen, rotieren und dehnen sich ohne die Miene
zu verziehen - unerreichbar für jeden ›Normalo‹...
Meine Unsportlichkeit (und Unfähigkeit so zu tanzen)
gab mir den Ansporn zu diesem Clip. Ich schrieb einen
›tanzbaren‹ Song, überlegte mir ein paar Choreographien
und fotografierte mich mit Selbstauslöser. Am PC waren
meiner Akrobatik keine Grenzen mehr gesetzt. Und ich
zeige euch wie man tanzt wenn man´s nicht kann!

Apparently the stars of MTV are not only terrific singers (...);
no! - nowadays they are also higher level dancers, they jump, turn
around and stretch without suffering - unreachable for every normal
human being... As I am not very keen on sports, I decided to
make this clip. I wrote a danceable song, tried a few choreographies
and photographed myself with the self-timer. Finally on the
computer, there were no limits left and I'll show you how to dance
if you can't!
