The last member is generally an ordinarysubstantive, but is sometimes a verbal or an ordinaryadjective. The relation of the first member to the last isappositional, attributive, or adverbial. It is expressed inthree :ways1. By a Substantive. If followed by a subst., it has anattributive sense equivalent to an adj. expressing sex ora compound nature; e.g. purusa-mrga (VS.) m. [man =)male antelope ; ultika-yatu m. owl demon,i. e. demon inform of an owl ; purusa-vyaghra (VS.) m. man-tiger, a kindof demon ; vrsa-kapi m. man-ape.If followed by a verbal adj., the preceding subst. is usuallyappositional in sense e. ; g. isana-krt acting as a ruler ;st6ma-tasta fashioned as a hymn of praise. But sometimesit is adverbial ; e. g. rtv-ij sacrificing in season = regidarly ;sarga-takta speeding with a rush.a.
