VEDIC ACCENT 451the Anudatta respectively asrepresenting three degrees ofpitch ; e. g. barhisi = barhisi (barhisi). The figure 2 is,however, also used to indicate3 !the Udatta when there is no,following Svarita ;e. g. gira = gira (gira). When thereare two successive Udattas, the second is not marked, but the following Svarita has 2r written above; e.g.3 1 2rdviso martyasya (dvis6 martyasya). The independentSvarita is also marked with 2r, the preceding Anudatta2rbeing indicated by 3k ;e. g. tanva = tanva.3k5. The Satapatha Brahrnana marks the Udatta only.It does so by means of a horizontal stroke below (like theAnudatta of the KV.) ;e, g. purusah = purusah. Of twoor more successive Udattas only the last is marked ;e. g.agnir hi vai dhur atha = agnir hi vai dhur atha. Anindependent Svarita is thrown back on the precedingsyllable in the form of an Udatta e.; g. manusyesu =manusyesu for manusyesu. The Svarita produced bychange to a semivowel, by contraction,or the elision ofinitial a is similarly treated ; e. g.evaitad = 6vaitad forevaitad (— eva etad).6. Accent of single words. Every Vedic word is, asa rule, accented and has one main accent only. In theoriginal text of the EV. the only main accent was the Udattawhich, as Comparative Philology shows, generally rests onthe same syllable as it did in the Indo-European period ;e. g. ta-ta-s stretched, Gk. Ta-rd-ip€-Te}But in thewritten text of the EV. the Svarita appears to be the mainaccent in some words. It then always follows a y or vwhich represents original i or u with Udatta ;e. g. rathyam'But (pepufiepo-i (bharamanas) by the secondary Greek law ofaccentuation which prevents the acute from going back farther thanthe third syllable from the end of a word.Gg2
