METHODS OF MARKING ACCENTS 449followed by the Atharvaveda, the Vajasaneyi Samhita, theTaittirlya Samhita and Brahmana, is peculiar in not markingthe principal accent at all. This seems to be due to the factthat in the RV. the pitch of the Udatta is intermediatebetween the other two tones. Hence the preceding Anudatta,as having a low pitch, is indicated l)elow the syllable bearingitby a horizontal stroke, while the following Svarita, whichat first rises to a slightly higher pitch and then falls, isindicated above the syllable bearing it by a vertical stroke ;e. g. agnina = agnina ; viryam = viryam (for viriam).Successive Udattas at the beginning of a hemistich areindicated by the absence of all marks till the enclitic Svaritawhich follows the last of them or till the Anudatta which(ousting the enclitic Svarita) follows the last of them asa preparation for another Udatta (or for an independentSvarita) ; e. g. tav a yatam = tav a yatam ;tavet tatsatyam ^ = tav6t tat satyam. On the other hand, allsuccessive unaccented syllables at the beginning of ahemistich are marked with the Anudatta ; e. g.vaisvanaram=vaisvanaram. But all the unaccented syllables followinga Svarita remain unmarked till that which immediatelyprecedes an Udatta (or independent Svarita) e, ; g. imamme gange yamune sarasvati sutiidri = imam me gaiigeyamune sarasvati sutudri.a. Since a hemistich of two or more Padas is treated asa unit that consists of an unbroken chain of accented andunaccented syllables, and ignores the division into Padas, the mai'king of the preceding Anudatta and the followingSvarita is not limited to the word in which the Udattaoccurs, but extends to the contiguous words not only of thesame, but of the succeeding Pada ;e. g. agnina rayimasnavat posam eva dive-dive = agnina rayim asnavat|1Here the enclitic Svarita, which would rest on the syllable sa ifthe following syllable were vmaccented, is ousted by the Anudatta, which is required to indicate that the following syllable tyam has theUdatta.1819 G g
