led defence industry-heavy delegations. For the first<br />

time in the history <strong>of</strong> the DOD, a <strong>Defence</strong> Industry<br />

Day was held with the industry, where there were<br />

candid and open discussions. They were assisted in<br />

securing the necessary Requests for Purchase from<br />

the relevant countries. Some companies have been<br />

able to secure contracts as a result <strong>of</strong> one or other<br />

visit to prospective buyers with the DOD. Industry<br />

representatives were able to brief the Minister <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Defence</strong> for the first time on their interactions and<br />

the status quo <strong>of</strong> their interactions with particular<br />

countries, and requested possible assistance from<br />

the MOD. In the year under review, ties between<br />

the <strong>Defence</strong>-Related Industry and the DOD were<br />

cemented by close cooperation and common purpose<br />

to alleviate poverty, and support to ASGISA.<br />

The Division successfully upgraded and completed<br />

Casspir Mk III vehicles, which were delivered to<br />

the SA Army. The commissioning into service <strong>of</strong><br />

new Rapid Deployment Logistical Vehicles for the<br />

parachute forces as well as the Rapid Deployment<br />

Reconnaissance Vehicles for the Special Forces<br />

commenced. The upgraded Mamba vehicles for the<br />

Motorised Infantry have also been handed over to<br />

the SA Army and some <strong>of</strong> them have been deployed<br />

with the SA Army Peacekeeping Forces. The SA<br />

Army also received the new Light Machine Guns<br />

as well as the Automatic Grenade Launchers into<br />

service. The second Type 209 submarine, the SAS<br />

Charlotte Maxeke, arrived in Simon’s Town on 26 April<br />

2007. All four corvettes have been commissioned<br />

into service. Two Agusta A109 LUH helicopters<br />

were accepted and delivered during this period. This<br />

brings the total number <strong>of</strong> aircraft delivered to 23,<br />

out <strong>of</strong> the contractual delivery <strong>of</strong> 30 helicopters.<br />

Procurement Projects: Contracts for<br />

accommodation, fresh fruit, vegetables and meat,<br />

waste removal, cleaning services, fuel supply, medical<br />

support and insurance were successfully negotiated<br />

and concluded in support <strong>of</strong> operational missions<br />

in the Central African Republic, DRC, Burundi and<br />

Sudan.<br />

Purpose<br />

The Administration P<strong>rogramme</strong> conducts the policy<br />

development, management and administration <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Department</strong>.<br />

The Special <strong>Defence</strong> Account P<strong>rogramme</strong> provides<br />

for special defence activities as well as the authorised<br />

acquisition <strong>of</strong> main equipment and associated<br />

services.<br />

Measurable Objectives<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> Acquisition Services is to manage<br />

the DOD acquisition and procurement processes<br />

and policies.<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> the Special <strong>Defence</strong> Account<br />

P<strong>rogramme</strong> is to meet the <strong>Department</strong>’s needs<br />

by acquiring and maintaining appropriate defence<br />

equipment, through activities that meet the<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the Government.<br />
