as impressive or forceful as it is in English; it would simply<br />

read 'removing all faults'. In another context such as 'rooting<br />

out the human race', the Arabic rendering <strong>of</strong> the metaphor would be<br />

far more forceful than the English; hence the complexity <strong>of</strong><br />

translating metaphor.<br />

Rhetorical structures start where syntactic structures<br />

leave <strong>of</strong>f. Therefore, they are not rule-governed. The meaning <strong>of</strong><br />

a rhetorical pattern is not the cumulative meaning <strong>of</strong> its<br />

constituent elements. The meaning generates from the way the<br />

lexemes are ordered and the cultural context in which the<br />

rhetorical pattern unfolds. Rhetorical patterns derive their<br />

meanings from specific features such as novelty <strong>of</strong> expression,<br />

unusual order, parallelism <strong>of</strong> form, rhythmic features, repetition,<br />

and total context. Discussing the function <strong>of</strong> such conventional<br />

features in poetry, Samuel R. Levin writes:<br />

"The significance <strong>of</strong> the function performed by the<br />

conventions has been variously assessed. In some<br />

treatments <strong>of</strong> the problem, the function is said to<br />

be one <strong>of</strong> decoration and embellishment. Others<br />

point to the organizing, unifying function <strong>of</strong> the<br />

conventions. Still others discuss the interaction<br />

<strong>of</strong> the conventions with linguistic characteristics<br />

<strong>of</strong> the poem and claim that this interaction imparts<br />

a certain complexity to the whole." (Literary<br />
