Wad Hamid' is, on the whole, a very good one. The above mismatches,<br />

among others on the level <strong>of</strong> syntax, could be attributed to oversights,<br />

insufficient acquaintance with the subtleties <strong>of</strong> Arabic syntax and<br />

grammar and, above all, close fidelity to the verbal accuracy <strong>of</strong> the<br />

source text. In some places, eg., the neighbour's dream-<br />

interpretational comment, the translation does not faithfully reflect<br />

the source culture.<br />

With regard to semantic and contextual equivalence, the source and<br />

target texts are almost identical. The translator has very closely<br />

observed the meaning content <strong>of</strong> the source text so much so that<br />

equivalence on the lexical and syntactical level was slightly impaired.<br />

He followed the sequence <strong>of</strong> events as displayed in the source text<br />

without the least deviation or modification. However, I find that the<br />

translation would impress the English-speaking Arab reader much more<br />

than the English native speaker. Whether the translation was designed<br />

for English native speakers or English-speaking non-natives can be<br />

referred only to the translator.<br />

The poem is written by Ali bn Muhammad Al-Tihami and is entitled:<br />

"On the Death <strong>of</strong> a Son". It would be appropriate, in this respect, if<br />

we gave the English reader a brief account <strong>of</strong> ancient Arabian poetry so<br />
