language. Translations <strong>of</strong> medical, scientific, and technological<br />

materials fall under this heading. The translator's sole<br />

preoccupation is none other than getting the information across in the<br />

second language. In aesthetic-poetic translation, the translator<br />

takes into consideration the effect, emotion, and feelings <strong>of</strong> an<br />

original language message, the aesthetic form used by the original<br />

author, as well as any information item in the ressage. The<br />

informative elements <strong>of</strong> the source message are not wholly disregarded;<br />

the stress being primarily laid on the artistic form and the aesthetic<br />

appeal <strong>of</strong> the message. All forms <strong>of</strong> creative writing fall into this<br />

category. The third type is ethnographic translation in which the<br />

cultural context <strong>of</strong> the source message is over-stressed. In<br />

ethnographic translation emphasis is laid on the communicative<br />

participants' actual use <strong>of</strong> words and phrases in their relevant socio-<br />

cultural contexts. The translator is advised to be sensitive to and<br />

knowledgeable in the cultures <strong>of</strong> both source and target languages.<br />

Linguistic translation is concerned with "equivalent meanings <strong>of</strong> the<br />

constituent morphemes <strong>of</strong> the second language and with grammatical<br />

form." (Casagrande, 1954, p337)<br />

Casagrande's typology comprehends nearly all translatable texts.<br />

The choice <strong>of</strong> a particular type <strong>of</strong> translation lies exclusively with<br />

the translator, and is conditioned by the specific layer <strong>of</strong> meaning he<br />

wishes to bring into focus. Oveilaps are bound to occur.<br />
