What are theseconservational processes that take us fromconcrete particularity to a more abstract anenduring way of structuring experience –how do we get from mere appearance to adeeper more continuous sense of “reality.”Vygotsky’s program was quite different. His principal concern was with the processesinvolved in the socialization of experience;how experience becomes socialized in amanner that permits us to relate our mentalactivity to the socially relevant ways of theculture in which we must live.We have come to recognize that bothemphases are needed in a properly balancedpsychology – especially in developmentalpsychology. And increasingly wePlumilla Educativaare becoming aware of how important itis to take both perspectives into account:our attachment to the Established and oursearch for the possible.Psychology has become one of themost challenging disciplines of our day, particularly when it is paired with its historical, cultural and biological cousins. We have learned about how our speciesmanages to cope both with culturallyEstablished while testing the limits of thepossible. We are learning much about howour species reinvents itself to cope bothwith the constrains of our biological natureand with the constrains of the culturalworlds that we create. May we continuecreatively on our guest!Universidad de Manizales • 13
