However, this low figure does not reflect <strong>the</strong> dimensi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> industryin Libya, given that <strong>the</strong> overwhelming majority <strong>of</strong> logistics activity is handled internallyand that, for example, <strong>the</strong> mining and oil industries account for more than 66% <strong>of</strong>GDP.With <strong>the</strong> excepti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> port sector, no overall statistical data are available for trafficin <strong>the</strong> transport and logistics sector.Transport and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Logistics</str<strong>on</strong>g> OperatorsRoad Transport<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> structure <strong>of</strong> this sector is characterized as follows:• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is no State company operating in <strong>the</strong> sector.• Major State companies such as <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Oil Corporati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Steel Company, <strong>the</strong>Nati<strong>on</strong>al Mining Corporati<strong>on</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Libyan Cement Company have <strong>the</strong>ir own transport,although <strong>the</strong>y do also use private transport companies.• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> private transport companies can be divided into three categories: big companies(with more than ten vehicles); small companies (with more than five vehicles); and selfemployedindividuals, which is <strong>the</strong> largest category.Rail Transport• Rail transport does not yet exist. Two lines are being c<strong>on</strong>structed. Although a finaldecisi<strong>on</strong> has yet to be made, it is very likely that in <strong>the</strong> early stages a State railwaycompany will be created to handle freight and passenger services.Maritime Transport and <strong>the</strong> Port <str<strong>on</strong>g>Sector</str<strong>on</strong>g>• Libya’s State shipping company, <strong>the</strong> General Nati<strong>on</strong>al Maritime Transport Company, has24 tankers. It is diversifying its activities. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> majority <strong>of</strong> maritime transport services areprovided by large internati<strong>on</strong>al shipping companies (Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM).• Libya has 18 ports, including commercial ports, industrial ports and those specializing inoil traffic.
