y his assent to the rationalistic Criticism of the Canon, his rejection of the<br />

Church Doctrine of the Trinity, <strong>and</strong> his denial of the supreme divinity of<br />

the Son <strong>and</strong> the Spirit (subordinatism), <strong>and</strong> by his rejection of the<br />

Lutheran Exegesis of the Words of the Institution of the Supper, while he<br />

yet professes to hold fast to the substance of the Lutheran Doctrine of the<br />

Eucharist.<br />

If the Nineteenth Century has not been an era of the most safe <strong>and</strong><br />

solid thinking, it has, beyond all dispute, been the most brilliant era in the<br />

history of theological science; <strong>and</strong> alike of the inventiveness that glittered,<br />

<strong>and</strong> of the sobriety that restrained, the theological impulse which the world<br />

owes to the Lutheran Church, has been the spring.<br />

In the United States the energies of the best men in the Church have<br />

been directed mainly into the channels of practical activity; yet there has<br />

nevertheless been an honorable exhibition of theological ability <strong>and</strong><br />

learning. Among the names of those to whom we owe books, either as<br />
