<strong>The</strong> reader will please observe that this illustration is neither<br />

designed as a proof of the doctrine, nor as an exhibition of the mode of the<br />

union, but simply as an aid in removing a misunderst<strong>and</strong>ing of the<br />

definition of terms.<br />

8. "We believe, teach, <strong>and</strong> confess that there occurred no such<br />

effusion of the Majesty of God, <strong>and</strong> of all His properties, on the human<br />

nature of Christ, or that anything was withdrawn from the divine nature, or<br />

that anything from it was so bestowed on another, that in this respect it no<br />

longer retained it in itself; or that the human nature, in its own substance<br />

<strong>and</strong> essence, received A LIKE MAJESTY, separate from the divine nature<br />

<strong>and</strong> essence."<br />

9. "For neither the human nature in Christ, nor any other creature in<br />

heaven or in earth, is capacious of divine omnipotence in that way, to wit,<br />

that of itself it could have an omnipotent essence, or have the properties of<br />

omnipotence in itself <strong>and</strong> per se."<br />

10. "For in this way the human nature in Christ would be denied<br />

<strong>and</strong> completely changed into divinity, Which is repugnant to our Christian<br />

faith, <strong>and</strong> the teaching of the prophets <strong>and</strong> apostles."<br />

11. "We reject, therefore, <strong>and</strong> with one consent, one mouth, one<br />

heart, condemn all errors departing from the sound doctrine we have<br />

presented; errors which conflict with the writings of the apostles <strong>and</strong> the<br />

prophets, with the received <strong>and</strong> approved Ancient Creeds, <strong>and</strong> with our<br />

cherished Augsburg Confession. THESE ERRORS we will briefly <strong>and</strong><br />

summarily recite:<br />

"That the human nature of Christ, because of the personal union, is<br />

confounded with the divinity, or transmuted into it:<br />

"That the human nature in Christ IN THE SAME WAY AS<br />

DIVINITY, as an infinite essence, <strong>and</strong> by an essential virtue or property of<br />

its own nature, IS EVERYWHERE PRESENT:<br />

"That the human nature in Christ has become equal to the divine<br />

nature in its substance or essence, <strong>and</strong> essential properties:<br />

"That the humanity of Christ is locally extended in all places of<br />

heaven <strong>and</strong> earth, an affirmation which cannot be made with truth, even of<br />

divinity:
