of 1531, trifling changes of a verbal nature had been made, but in antithesis<br />

to both this Edition <strong>and</strong> the Original of 1530, that of 1540 is called the<br />

Variata, because it has elaborated anew some of the articles, <strong>and</strong> has made<br />

important changes. <strong>The</strong> first articles so treated is the Article on Original<br />

Sin, (II) in which the changes are these as given in brackets:<br />

"<strong>The</strong>y also teach that after Adam's fall all men propagated after the<br />

common course of nature [the natural mode] are born with sin [being<br />

born have sin of origin] that is without fear of God, without trust toward<br />

God. [But by sin of origin, we underst<strong>and</strong>, what the Holy Fathers so call,<br />

<strong>and</strong> all the orthodox <strong>and</strong> piously instructed in the Church, to wit, liability<br />

(reatum) by which those born, are on account of (propter) Adam's fall,<br />

liable to (rei) the wrath of God <strong>and</strong> eternal death, as also, the corruption<br />

itself, of human nature, which (corruption) is propagated from Adam,] <strong>and</strong><br />

with concupiscence, [And the corruption of human nature, defect of the<br />

original righteousness, or integrity, or obedience, embraces<br />

concupiscence.]<br />
