SENSE (omni modo), but of another mode of life, of intercourse, and of
presence."
5. General conclusion.
"Though, therefore, this presence be not in any way of this world,
which we can understand or comprehend, yet He can fulfil (the
sacramental promise) in ANOTHER MODE, though it be
incomprehensible to us. 'Christ is united and conjoined with us who are
yet on earth, not indeed in any gross mode of this life, a mode which
would make Him an object of touch (attingentiae), but IN A
SUPERNATURAL AND HEAVENLY MODE, YET TRULY.' 'The
Article of the Ascension, therefore, not only does not overthrow the simple
and genuine sense of the institution (of the Lord's Supper), but, on the
contrary, rightly explained, confirms the verity of it.'"
II. The Body of Christ.
"We believe and confess that the Son of God assumed the true and
not here, but is risen.' According also to those properties, and agreeably to
the mode of a true body, Luther, with Augustine and the Scholastics,
believes that the body of Christ is now in glory, in that circumscribed form
in which He showed Himself to Paul and Stephen, in which also He shall
return to judgment, and in which He is seen in heaven by angels and
saints."
III. The Presence of Christ. 1. The promise of Christ’s presence.
"When Christ says: 'Where two or three are gathered together in my
name, there am I in the midst of them,' we rightly understand the promise
of the WHOLE CHRIST, or of His entire person, for He says that He, in
whose name we are gathered, is present. But no one will dare to say that
the name of Christ is His divine nature alone. It is His whole person, in
each nature, and according to each nature, and, indeed, in His office of
