Luther’s Childhood<br />

<strong>The</strong> work contains forty-eight engravings, divided, with reference to<br />

the leading events of his life, or the great features of his character, into<br />

seven parts. <strong>The</strong> FIRST division embraces the years of his childhood--<strong>and</strong>,<br />

not uncharacteristically of the German origin of the book, presents us as<br />

a first picture Martin Luther (such we must here call him by anticipation)<br />

on the night of "his birth, 11 o'clock, November 10th, 1483." Speaking<br />

of Luther's birth, Carlyle says: "In the whole world, that day, there was not<br />

a more entirely unimportant-looking pair of people, than this miner <strong>and</strong><br />

his wife. And yet what were all Emperors, Popes, <strong>and</strong> Potentates, in<br />

comparison? <strong>The</strong>re was born here, once more, a Mighty Man; whose light<br />

was to flame as the beacon over long centuries <strong>and</strong> epochs of the world;<br />

the whole world <strong>and</strong> its history was waiting for this man. It is strange, it is<br />

great. It leads us back to another Birth-hour, in a still meaner<br />

environment, eighteen hundred years ago--of which it is fit<br />
