3Installing a Brocade MLX-16 routerCAUTIONIf you do not install a module in a slot, you must keep the slot blank in place. If you run the devicewith an uncovered slot, the system may overheat. Tighten the screws that secure the slot blanksso that they remain in place when removing adjacent panels or modules.Although the slot blanks differ in size, the procedure for removing them is identical. You will need aflat-blade screwdriver to perform this task.Follow these steps to remove a slot blank.1. Loosen the screws on either end of the slot blank by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver.2. Pull the slot blank out of the router and store it in a safe place for future use.CAUTIONIf you are hot-swapping a module, allow a minimum of two seconds after a module (or powersupply or fan tray) has been removed before inserting a module in the same slot.Follow this procedure to install an interface module, management module, or switch fabric modulein the Brocade MLX-16 router1. If you are installing a module in a slot which may have been previously configured for adifferent module type, remove the old configuration information using this procedure:a. Use the show running-config command in config mode to determine the currentconfiguration of the slot.Brocade(config)# show running-configCurrent configuration:!ver V5.0.0T163module 1 ni-mlx-20-port-1g-copper!This example shows that slot 1 is currently configured for a 20-port 1 Gbps copperinterface module.b. With the module designation from show running-config command output, use the nomodule command to remove the configuration from slot 1.Brocade(config)# no module 1 ni-mlx-20-port-1g-copperThis command removes the configuration from slot 1, leaving it ready for a new module.2. Put on the ESD wrist strap and ground yourself by inserting the plug into the ESD connector onthe front of the chassis.3. Remove the module from the packaging.4. Insert the module into the router slot, and slide the module along the card guide until theejectors on either side of the module rotate towards the module front panel.NOTEWhen inserting a module into the router, make sure that the module faceplate does notoverlap the faceplate of an adjacent module.180 Brocade MLX Series and Brocade NetIron XMR Hardware Installation Guide53-1002373-02
Installing a Brocade MLX-16 router 35. Rotate the ejectors flush with the module front panel. This action will fully seat the module inthe backplane.6. Tighten the two screws on the module faceplate by pushing them in and turning themclockwise. Complete the tightening process using the flat-blade screwdriver.7. Enter the write memory command to ensure that the slot will be correctly configured for thenew module after a reboot.Brocade(config)# write memoryWrite startup-config done.FIGURE 127Installing a module in a Brocade MLX-16 routerIf you install thirteen or more NI-MLX-1Gx48-T-A modules are installed in your router, you will need aminimum of five power supplies. You can achieve 5+3 power redundancy by installing an additionalthree power supplies.When one or more NI-MLX-1GX48-T-A modules are installed in the Brocade MLX-16 router, youmust replace the NI-X-16-FAN-EXH fan modules with NIBI-16-FAN-EXH-A high speed fan modules.Refer to “Installing NIBI-16-FAN-EXH-A fan assemblies” on page 182.NIBI-16-FAN-EXH-A fan assemblies are not shipped with the Brocade MLX-16 router.
