Installing a Brocade NetIron XMR 32000 router 4Installing Brocade NetIron XMR 32000 modulesThe Brocade NetIron XMR 32000 ships with empty module slots, and upper and lower shippingpanels installed. For instructions about installing 2x100GbE interface modules, refer to “Installing 2x100GbEinterface modules in Brocade MLX routers” on page 239.The sequence for installing multiple modules is important to ensure proper fit in the BrocadeNetIron XMR 32000 router. When populating the Brocade NetIron XMR 32000 router, start with themiddle slot, and work towards the edge. Always fill the bottom slots of the upper and lower cardcage first. Refer to Figure 8 on page 12 for slot locations. The following rules apply:• Do not insert interface modules running software releases below 02.3.00 into slots 17 to 32 ofa Brocade NetIron XMR 32000 router. They should only be inserted into slots 1 to 16.• All empty slots must contain slot blanks to ensure proper air flow within the router.• During the initial installation of the modules, it is recommended that you insert all the modulesinto the slots before tightening the module faceplate screws. When populating the Brocade NetIron XMR 32000 router, the modules must be installed in theappropriate slots:• Management modules: management slots 1 and 2• Switch fabric modules: switch fabric slots 1-8• Interface modules: Interface slots 1-32DANGERThe intra-building port or ports of the equipment or subassembly is suitable for connection tointra-building or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building port or ports of theequipment or subassembly MUST NOT be metallically connected to interfaces that connect to theoutside plant (OSP) or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use as intra-buildinginterfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 5) and requireisolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficientprotection in order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.NOTEBrocade NetIron XMR modules are dedicated, which means that you must install them in theBrocade NetIron XMR router only. For example, if you install the Brocade NetIron XMR module inanother Brocade router or install a module intended for another Brocade router in the BrocadeNetIron XMR router, the router and module will not function properly.Although management modules are designed to be hot-swappable, you must upgrade the softwareon all interface modules and management modules to the appropriate software release beforeinstalling them. For more information on the appropriate software release, refer to the HardwareInstallation Notes that shipped with the management module. If you are installing a redundant management module, refer to the Brocade MLX Series and BrocadeNetIron Family Configuration Guide, Chapter 8: Using a Redundant Management Module forinformation about how the redundant module works, optional software configurations, and how tomanage redundancy.Brocade MLX Series and Brocade NetIron XMR Hardware Installation Guide 27753-1002373-02
