You will need aflat-blade screwdriver to perform this task.Follow these steps to remove a slot blank.1. Loosen the screws on each end of the slot blank by hand or with a flat-blade screwdriver.2. Pull the slot blank out of the router, and store it in a safe place for future use.CAUTIONIf you do not install a module in a slot, you must leave the slot blank installed in the slot. If youoperate the router with an uncovered slot, the system may overheat.Rules for populating a Brocade NetIron XMR 16000 routerThe sequence for installing multiple modules is important to ensure proper fit in the BrocadeNetIron XMR 16000 router. Always fill the bottom slots in the router first and install modules fromthe left side to the right side of the router. Refer to Figure 7 on page 10 for slot locations.Follow these rules for populating a Brocade NetIron XMR 16000 router:• Install a management module in management slot 2.• Install interface modules in interface slots 2, 4, 6, and 8.• Install switch fabric modules in the switch fabric slots 2 and 4.• Install interface modules in interface slots 10, 12, 14, and 16.• Install a management module in management slot 1.• Install interface modules in interface slots 1, 3, 5, and 7.• Install switch fabric modules in the switch fabric slots 1 and 3.• Install interface modules in interface slots 9,11,13, and 15.NOTEIf you are installing a redundant management module, refer to the Brocade MLX Series and BrocadeNetIron Family Configuration Guide, Chapter 8, “Using a Redundant Management Module” forinformation about how the redundant module works, optional software configurations that you canperform, and how to manage the redundancy feature.266 Brocade MLX Series and NetIron XMR Hardware Installation Guide53-1002373-02
Installing a Brocade NetIron XMR 16000 router 4Before installing a module in the Brocade NetIron XMR 16000 router, have these items available:• A large flat-blade screwdriver.• An ESD wrist strap with a plug for connection to the ESD connector on the router.DANGERFor safety reasons, the ESD wrist strap should contain a 1 megohm series resistor.CAUTIONIf you are hot-swapping a module, allow a minimum of two seconds after a module (or powersupply or fan tray) has been removed before inserting a module in the same slot.NOTEFor 16-slot devices, if you insert a module into a slot where the fan speed for a previous module wasmanually configured, you will need to change the fan speed back to auto. For example, if the fanspeed was manually configured to “slow”, and you are installing a module that requires more coolingpower, the “slow” setting will cause the module to overheat. To configure the fan speed to auto, enterthe following command:Brocade# conf tBrocade# set-fan-speed autoSyntax: set-fan-speed autoFollow these steps to install a module in the Brocade NetIron XMR 16000 router.1. Put on the ESD wrist strap and ground yourself by inserting the plug into the ESD connector onthe router.2. Remove the module from the packaging.3. With the ejectors rotated away from the module faceplate, insert the module into the slot (referand slide the module along the card guide until the ejectors rotate towards the modulefaceplate.NOTEWhen inserting the module into the router, make sure that the faceplate doesn’t overlap withthe faceplate of an adjacent interface module.4.
