4Installing a Brocade NetIron XMR 8000 routeror Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 5) and require isolation from the exposedOSP cabling. The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection in order to connectthese interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.NOTEBrocade NetIron XMR modules are dedicated, which means that you must install them in a BrocadeNetIron XMR router only. For example, if you install the Brocade NetIron XMR module in anotherBrocade device or install a module intended for another Brocade device in the Brocade NetIron XMRrouter, the router and module will not function properly.Although management modules are designed to be hot-swappable, you must upgrade the softwareon all interface modules and management modules to the appropriate software release beforeinstalling them. For more information on the appropriate software release, refer to the HardwareInstallation Notes that shipped with the management module. For information about how to disable and re-enable power to interface modules, see “Disabling andre-enabling power to interface modules” on page 321Table 41 provides the slot numbers where you can install modules. Identification marks appear athe base of each slot.TABLE 41ModuleBrocade NetIron XMR 8000 module installationSlot numberManagement modulesActive module – M1 (left).Redundant module – M2 (right).1 – 8 Interface modulesSF1 – SF3Switch fabric modulesThe Brocade NetIron XMR 8000 router ships with slot blanks installed in all empty module slots. The slot blanks cover empty slots, ensuring proper airflow within the router. Before you install amodule in a slot, you must remove the slot blank.CAUTIONIf you do not install a module in a slot, you must keep the slot blank in place. If you operate therouter with an uncovered slot, the system may overheat. Tighten the screws that secure the slotblanks so that they remain in place when removing adjacent panels or modules.Although slot blanks differ in size, the procedure for removing them is the same. You will need aflat-blade screwdriver to perform this task.Follow the steps to remove a slot blank.1. Loosen the screws on either end of the slot blank by hand or with a flat blade screwdriver.2. Pull the slot blank out of the router, and store it in a safe place for future use.NOTEIf you are installing a redundant management module, refer to Brocade MLX Series and BrocadeNetIron Family Configuration Guide, Chapter 8: Using a Redundant Management Module, forinformation about how the redundant module works, optional software configurations, and how tomanage redundancy.256 Brocade MLX Series and NetIron XMR Hardware Installation Guide53-1002373-02
