2Installing a <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 routerInstalling a <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 routerThis section describes how to install a <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 router.NOTEIllustrations in this chapter may differ slightly from the actual equipment.Preparing the installation siteBefore installing the router, plan the location <strong>and</strong> orientation relative to other devices <strong>and</strong>equipment. For cooling purposes, allow a minimum of six inches of space between the sides, front,<strong>and</strong> the back of the router <strong>and</strong> walls or other obstructions. If a router is installed in a perforatedenclosure, the perforations must cover at least 60 percent of the surface.NOTEThis equipment is suitable for installation in a Network Telecommunication facility <strong>and</strong> where NECrequirements apply. Additionally, it may be installed in either a Common Bonding Network (CBN) orIsolated Bonding Network (IBN). It is not intended for Outside Plant (OSP) installations.Ensure that the proper cabling is installed at the site.For information on cabling, refer to “Installing power supplies in the <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 router” onpage 85, “Attaching a management station” on page 140, <strong>and</strong> “Connecting the router to a networkdevice” on page 317.Unpacking a <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 routerThe <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 router ships with the following items:• Switch fabric modules installed in slots marked SF, <strong>and</strong> slot blanks installed in all emptymodule slots.• Two AC or two DC power supplies• Insertion or extraction tool for use with RJ45 <strong>and</strong> fiber-optic connectors.Save the shipping carton <strong>and</strong> packing materials in case you need to move or ship the router at alater time.Lifting guidelines for <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 routersFollow these guidelines for lifting <strong>and</strong> moving <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 routers:• Before lifting or moving the router, disconnect all external cables.• Do not attempt to lift a fully configured router by yourself.• It is recommended that you install router components after you have installed the router in arack.Installing a <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 router in a rackBecause of the weight of a fully loaded <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong>e-8 router, <strong>Brocade</strong> recommends mounting itin a rack before installing the modules <strong>and</strong> AC power supplies.80 <strong>Brocade</strong> <strong>MLX</strong> <strong>Series</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>NetIron</strong> <strong>XMR</strong> <strong>Hardware</strong> Installation Guide53-1002373-02
