Connecting the router to a network device 6Cleaning fiber-optic ports and connectorsTo avoid problems with connections between fiber-optic ports and fiber cable connectors, it isstrongly recommended that you clean ports and connectors each time you make a connection.Dust can accumulate inside the port and connector and cause problems as serious as reducing theoptic launch power. To clean the fiber-optic ports and cable connectors, it is recommended that you use a fiber-opticreel-type cleaner. You can purchase this type of cleaner from the following website:http://www.fisfiber.com/When you are not using a fiber-optic transceiver port, always replace the protective cover.Troubleshooting network connectionsObserve connection LEDs to determine if network connections are functioning properly. Table 45lists the LEDs related to the network connections, the desired state of each LED, possibleabnormal states of each LED, and what to do if an LED indicates an abnormal state.TABLE 45LEDDesiredstateInterface moduleNetwork connection-related LED statesMeaningAbnormalstateMeaning or actionLink On A link isestablishedwith the remoteport.ActiveOn orblinkingThe port istransmittingand receivinguser packets.OffOff for anextendedperiod.A link is not established with the remote port. Try thefollowing:• Verify that the connection to the other network devicehas been properly made, and that the other networkdevice is powered on and operating correctly.• Verify that the transmit port on a router is connected tothe receive port on the other network device, and thatthe receive port on the router is connected to thetransmit port on the other network device. If you are notcertain, remove the two cable connectors and reinsertthem in the port connector, reversing their order.• Dust may have accumulated in the cable connector orport connector. For information about cleaning theconnectors, refer to “Cleaning fiber-optic ports andconnectors” on page 319.• If these actions do not resolve the problem, try using adifferent port or a different cable. The port is not transmitting or receiving user packets. Try thefollowing:• Check the Link LED to make sure the link is stillestablished with the remote port. If not, take the actionsdescribed in the Meaning or Action column for the LinkLED.• Verify that the port has not been disabled through aconfiguration change. You can use the CLI. If you haveconfigured an IP address on the device, you also can usethe Web management interface or IronView NetworkManager. If a problem persists after taking these actions, contact Brocade Technical Support.Brocade MLX Series and Brocade NetIron XMR Hardware Installation Guide 31953-1002373-02
