4Installing a Brocade NetIron XMR 4000 routeroutside plant (OSP) or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use as intra-buildinginterfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 5) and requireisolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficientprotection in order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring.NOTEBrocade NetIron XMR modules are dedicated, which means that you must install them in theBrocade NetIron XMR router only. For example, if you install a Brocade NetIron XMR module inanother Brocade router or install a module intended for another Brocade router in the BrocadeNetIron XMR router, the router and module will not function properly.Although management modules are designed to be hot-swappable, you must upgrade the softwareon all interface modules and management modules to the appropriate software release beforeinstalling them. For more information on the appropriate software release, refer to the HardwareInstallation Notes that shipped with the management module. For information about how to disable and re-enable power to interface modules, see “Disabling andre-enabling power to interface modules” on page 321Table 40 provides the router slot numbers where you install the modules. Identification markingsappear at the base of each slot.TABLE 40ModuleBrocade NetIron XMR 4000 module installationSlot numberManagement modulesInterface modules 1 – 4Switch fabric modulesActive module – M1 (left).Redundant module – M2 (right).SF1 – SF3If you are installing a redundant management module, refer to the Brocade MLX Series andBrocade NetIron Family Configuration Guide, Chapter 8, Using a Redundant Management Module, for information about how the redundant module works, optional software configurations, and howto manage redundancy. For information about how to replace an interface module in an active system, refer to “Replacingan interface module” on page 351.The Brocade NetIron XMR 4000 router ships with slot blanks installed in all module slots. Slotblanks cover empty slots to ensure proper airflow. To install a module, first remove the slot blankfrom the module slot.CAUTIONIf you do not install a module in a slot, you must keep the slot blank in place. If you run the routerwith an uncovered slot, it may overheat. Tighten the screws that secure the slot blanks so thatthey remain in place when removing adjacent panels or modules.246 Brocade MLX Series and NetIron XMR Hardware Installation Guide53-1002373-02
