That the Public Property Committee is hereby<br />

ordered to make an inspection <strong>of</strong> all the Public Buildings in the city, and<br />

that the Committee be further empowered to have access to all papers, docu-<br />

ments, etc. pertaining to all contracts <strong>of</strong> construction, alterations or ad-<br />

ditions to any Public Buildings in the city, and that the Committee report<br />

its findings when its report is ready, to this Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen.-<br />

Question came on the adoption <strong>of</strong> the order. Alderman Sherman<br />

made a motion that the order be laid on the table. The vote was by roll call<br />

13 voting in the negative, 7 voting in the affirmative, 1 being absent and<br />

the order was not laid on the table.<br />

Question then came on the adoption <strong>of</strong> the order. Alderman<br />

Sherman invoked section 15 .and further action delayed for this meeting.<br />

Alderman Barrett <strong>of</strong>fered the following order,<br />

His honor the mayor and Chief <strong>of</strong> Police De-<br />

partment are hereby requested to consider the advisability <strong>of</strong> stationing a<br />

traffic <strong>of</strong>ficer in Powder House square.<br />

Alderman Cronin <strong>of</strong>fered the following order,<br />

For the benefit <strong>of</strong> dependents <strong>of</strong> the members<br />

<strong>of</strong> our Police and Pire Departments who may be killed or die from injuries received.in<br />

the performance <strong>of</strong> their duty, the Massachusetts State Legislature<br />

passed an act, which was approved May 10th, 1929.<br />

The acceptance by the city <strong>of</strong> this Act pays an annuity which<br />

affords protection to their dependents without it being necessary to go before<br />

the general public for subscriptions to benefit funds, which no doubt<br />

makes some dependents feel' they are objects <strong>of</strong> charity.<br />

This act, Chapter 308, Acts 1929, reads in part as follows:<br />

"If a member <strong>of</strong> the police or fire force <strong>of</strong> a city or town which accepts this<br />

section, or a member <strong>of</strong> the department <strong>of</strong> public safety doing police duty,<br />

is killed, or 1 dies within six months from injuries received, while in the<br />

performance <strong>of</strong> his duty as such member and it shall be proved to the satisfaction<br />

<strong>of</strong> the mayor and city council or selectmen , or <strong>of</strong> the commissioner<br />

<strong>of</strong> public safety subject to the approval <strong>of</strong> the governor and council, as the<br />

case may be, that such death was the natural and proximate result <strong>of</strong> an accident<br />

occurring"*during the performance and within the scope <strong>of</strong> his duty as<br />

such member, and the attending physician or medical examiner shall certify to<br />

the city, town or state treasurer, as the case may be, that the death was<br />

the direct result <strong>of</strong> the said injury, there shall be paid except as hereinafter<br />

provided, out <strong>of</strong> the city, town or state treasury, as the case may be,<br />

to the following dependents <strong>of</strong> such deceased person the following annuities:<br />
