, It is the sense <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen <strong>of</strong> the-,-'<br />

!it? <strong>of</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong>, at the request <strong>of</strong> His:Honor, Mayor John J. Murphy here-<br />

by respectfully petitions.the department <strong>of</strong> Public Works for the abolition<br />

<strong>of</strong>.grade crossings <strong>of</strong> the Boston & Maine Railroad at Davis Square, Grove<br />

Street, Willow Avenue and Cedar Street, We respectfully petition that these<br />

four crossings be abolished by. means <strong>of</strong> "a.tunnel <strong>of</strong> by depressing the rail-<br />

road tracks. We also respectfully petition the abolition <strong>of</strong> the grade<br />

crossing <strong>of</strong> tne Boston & Maine Railroad.at Park Street which was ordered by<br />

a court decree years.ago but has never been abolished.<br />

It is further Resolved: .<br />

That the shifting <strong>of</strong> freight trains on the first four cross-<br />

ings at frequent intervals particularly during the rush hours causes serious<br />

track congestion and constitutes a menace to the lives and safety <strong>of</strong> the<br />

people.<br />

.We most earnestly request that these crossings be among- the<br />

first to be abolished under your program.<br />

An Ordinance Amending Ordinance Relative to<br />

the Police Department.<br />

Be it ordained by tne Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong>, as<br />

Section 1. Section 1 <strong>of</strong> Chapter XXIV <strong>of</strong> the Revised Ordinances <strong>of</strong><br />

1 1 ,—<br />

1929 is hereby amended by striking out and inserting in place there<strong>of</strong> the<br />

following: - Section 1. The police department shall consist <strong>of</strong> a chief <strong>of</strong><br />

police, a deputy chief, and such-number <strong>of</strong> captains, lieutenants, sergeants<br />

and patrolmen as the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen, may from time to time determine.<br />

They shall take rank in the order in which they are named.<br />

The ordinance shall take effect upon its passage.<br />

further liability on a sign permit bond '-issued to Jams a H. Doherty for a sign<br />

over the sidewalk at 75 Summer Street, <strong>Somerville</strong> , said sign having been irans<br />

_f:erred to the Standard Oil Company <strong>of</strong> fl.Y. and bonded with the The Metropoli-<br />

tan Casualty and Insurance Company <strong>of</strong> Hew York. " '<br />

The license issued to 3!ames H. Doherty for a sign at this location is<br />

hereby revoked.<br />

The <strong>City</strong> Clerk is hereby authorized to inform trie bonding company that<br />

they are released from further liability.<br />
