MOTIONS, ORDERS AND RESOLUTIONS.<br />

The president <strong>of</strong>fered the following drafts <strong>of</strong> ordinances,<br />

relating to the appointment, compensation<br />

and removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers.•<br />

Be it ordained "by the board <strong>of</strong> aldermen <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Somer-<br />

Section 2a. The mayor .may, in the discharge <strong>of</strong> the duties <strong>of</strong><br />

his <strong>of</strong>fice, incur such .expenses for subordinates and other employees, for<br />

expert services not including legal services, for entertainment <strong>of</strong> guests,<br />

and for other purposes as he shall deem necessary and proper. He may appoint<br />

one or more secretaries to -aid him .in his <strong>of</strong>ficial duties," and for such<br />

.purposes may appoint as many such secretaries as he deems necessary from<br />

time to time, and may define and assign the various duties <strong>of</strong> said secretaries.<br />

Any <strong>of</strong> said secretaries may be removed at any time at the pleasure<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Mayor. He may fix the salary <strong>of</strong>," said secretaries subject to the approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong>Aldermen.<br />

This ordinance shall take effect upon its passage.<br />

Ordinance was read twice and copies having been printed and<br />

laid on the desk <strong>of</strong> each alderman, the question came on passing the ordinance<br />

to be enrolled.<br />

Alderman Sherman made a motion that the ordinance be referred<br />

to the Committee on Legislative Matters.Two aldermen having requested, the<br />

vote was by roll call, 9 aldermen voting in the affirmative, 5 aldermen vot-<br />

ing in the negative, 6 aldermen being absent, the president not voting, and<br />

the ordinance was referred to the Committee on Legislative .Matters.<br />

An Ordinance Amending Chapter XIII <strong>of</strong> the Revised<br />

Ordinances <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong> relating to<br />

the appointment,, compensation and removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

Be it ordained by the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Somer-<br />

Section 3a. There shall be an Assistant <strong>City</strong> Messenger who<br />

shall attend-all meetings <strong>of</strong> the BOard <strong>of</strong> Aldermen. He shall be appointed<br />

by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the Board <strong>of</strong> Aldermen. He shall hold<br />

his <strong>of</strong>fice for one year and until another is appointed and qualified in his<br />

stead, and may be removed and his place &r the unexpired term filled at the<br />

pleasure <strong>of</strong> the Mayor and Aldermen. He shall perform all services pertain-<br />

any committee there<strong>of</strong>, or.any <strong>of</strong>ficer or Board <strong>of</strong> the city and shall assist<br />

the <strong>City</strong> Messenger and in the absence <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> Messenger shall perform<br />

his duties.<br />

This ordinance shall take affect upon its passage.<br />
