employment and in keeping with the general consensus of opinion that those
who enjoy steady employment should do what they can to assist and relieve
their fellow men, it is hereby
Ordered that his honor the Mayor be hereby requested
to .take immediate steps to discontinue the practice now existing in the
Fire Department of the members of said department engaging in outside em-
ployment for pay; and that His honor the Mayor report to this Honorable Board
within two weeks what steps he has taken to effectuate the accomplishment of
this order for relieving the distress of our citizens.

His honor the Mayor is hereby requested to
authorize the Chief of Police, Chief Engineer of the Fire Department and the
heads of any other city departments whose employees may be on duty Thanks-
giving Day and Christmas. Day to permit said employees or members of the Police
or Fire Departments to have two hours off duty for dinner.

consider the advisability of making provision in next year's budget for the
purchase of land on Central St., between Medford st. and Highland ave. for
playground purposes.

Alderman Perry offered the following order,

His honor the Mayor is hereby requested to
consider the advisability of petitioning the General Court for authority to
establish a department to be known as the Park and Playground Department.
The head of this department shall be called the Park and Playground Commissioh-
er who shall have the entire charge of the maintenance and care of the parks
and playground s in the city, and all buildings situated thereon, and includ-
ing the Parkway on Broadway, between the Northern Artery and Grunt street,
and excepting those playgrounds which are a part of school yards. He shall
also have charge and care of all the trees which are now and may be placed
on the city property. The Park and Playground Commissioner shall be appointed
by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the Board of Aldermen, and all
other employees of this department shall be employed under the Civil Service
