The City of Somerville mourns the passing of one of its most
distinguished sons. The Great Almighty has removed from our midst City Solicitor,
William J. Shanahan. He was a man of sterling character; a splendid
citizen; a loving husband; a kind father; and a conscientious office holder.
Endowed with the gift of eloquence, his oratory held many spell-bound.
Gifted with a charming personality, he made numerous friends in all walks of
life. Talented with a keen legal mind, he gave sound and friendly advice to
his clients., Possessing the admirable quality of.fairness, he never took unfair
advantage of an opponent. Loving the truth, he never attempted to rise
above his fellow men by the contemptuous path of slander and villification.
Toler.able in all matters, he respected the religious beliefs of those who
differed with him in the matter of worship. Today, the City of Somerville
paid its tenderest respects to William J. Shanahan. Every honor was accorded
him. But somehow our efforts to pay him tribute seemed hollow and empty.
Even the beauty of the garlands of flowers that covered his shroud failed utterly
to convey our sympathies and feelings. When lovely flowers - God's
choicest gift to man - the breath of Heaven, cannot express our sentiments
how can mere words - no matter how eloquent or jewel-like be selected to give
even an inkling of our thoughts and emotions. Heaven has claimed his soul;
Mother Earth has received his body; while'we retain the memory of his hearty
handclasp, his cheery voice, his good fellowship;- and his kind deeds, we
cannot say good-bye to "Billy". He lives with us. God willing we shall meet
again in the Great Beyond.
The City Hall will remain_draped in mourning oolors for the balance
of a thirty day period, during which the flags of the City will remain
at half mast in tribute to his memory.
