RULE XV11<br />

FIRES<br />

Section 1. Police <strong>of</strong>ficers at fires shall be under the orders<br />

or instructions <strong>of</strong> the chief <strong>of</strong> assistant engineer .<strong>of</strong> the fire department<br />

and shall observe and obey his orders within the fire lines during such fires<br />

Every <strong>of</strong>ficer shall at all times have a fire alarm box dey in his possession'<br />

When an <strong>of</strong>ficer is satisfied that a fire exists in any structure he shall<br />

at once ring an alarm from the nearest signal box, without waiting to make<br />

any attempt to extinguish the fire himself. After ringing the alarm, he<br />

shall remain near the box to direct the firemen when they arrive. He shall<br />

note the time when the arlam is given and any circumstances conre cted therewith<br />

which may seem <strong>of</strong> im portance. Officers shall give special attention<br />

to the protection <strong>of</strong> property and prevention <strong>of</strong> crime until the fire is out<br />

and all property, real and personal, is secure, or until relieved in regular<br />

order.<br />

Section 2. 'A-'he <strong>of</strong>ficer who arrives first at the scene <strong>of</strong> the<br />

fire shall, have precedence and control <strong>of</strong> the other <strong>of</strong>ficers who may be present,<br />

until a superior <strong>of</strong>ficer arrives. In case <strong>of</strong> a second or other alarm<br />

being given for the same fire all the police patrolmen, except those at the<br />

fire, whether on duty or otherwise, shall immediately report" in uniform at<br />

the fire, or communicate with the <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge at the station, and wait<br />

for orders.'In all cases the <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge at a fire shall, as soon as<br />

possible, notify or cause to be notified, the <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge <strong>of</strong> the station<br />

bfufche exact location <strong>of</strong> the fire, and furnish such other information<br />

as will give him a thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> the situation and enable him to<br />

act understandingly.<br />

Section 3. The <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge at a fire shall, as soon as<br />

practicable, allow the <strong>of</strong>ficers from other routes, if any, who may be on<br />

duty there, to return to their'routes and shall also relieve from duty all<br />

other <strong>of</strong>ficers as soon as possible when their services are not required.<br />

Section 4. When an alarm <strong>of</strong> fire is rung, the <strong>of</strong>ficer in charge<br />

<strong>of</strong> the station house shall immediately despatch to the fire such additional<br />

police <strong>of</strong>ficers as may be necessary.<br />

RULE XVI11<br />

POLICE UNIFORMS _ -<br />

Section 1. The chief <strong>of</strong> police shall supply members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

force with buttons, numbers, badges, revolvers, clubs, handcuffs and other<br />

equipment, all <strong>of</strong> which shall remain the property <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> <strong>Somerville</strong>,<br />

to be returned to .the chief when the members <strong>of</strong> the force having them in<br />

his possession shall cease to belong to 'the department.<br />

Section 2. 'Uniforms and parts <strong>of</strong> xmiforms must be made strictly<br />

in accordance v/ith regulations. Each garment before being worn, shall be<br />

inspected by the chief <strong>of</strong> police, or such other <strong>of</strong>ficers as the chief may<br />

direct to see that it conforms to regulations. Uniforms and parts <strong>of</strong> uniforms<br />

not made in accordance with the regulations' will be rejected".<br />

Overcoats for all ranks below lieute'nt.<br />

Material, Regulation 30 ounce cloth.<br />

Overcoats shall be made to button to the neck .and to extend<br />

16 inches from the ground, to be double-bretited, with two rows <strong>of</strong> regulation<br />

<strong>Somerville</strong> Police buttons on breast, five in each rpw, rows placed 13 to 14<br />

inches apart from eye to eye at top, and 6^ inches apart at bottom. The buttons<br />

on the left side shall be sunk and securely fastened with leathers and<br />

rings. -<br />

Overcoats shall be made with full back and fitted with two<br />

straps let into the side seams in the back above the hips, the r^ght strap<br />

to have two regulation <strong>Somerville</strong> Police buttons about 44 inches apart, find<br />

the left strap to have button holes to correspond. These straps shall be<br />

securely sewed to the back <strong>of</strong> the coat after garment is finished.<br />

4 , , There shall be a fly in the back, extending not more than 22<br />

inches nor less than 19 inches from the bottom <strong>of</strong> the garment. The flap on<br />

the outside <strong>of</strong> the fly shall be fastened by three black bone buttons with<br />

buttonholes to correspond. The lower button and hole shall be 7 inches from<br />

the buttom <strong>of</strong> the overcoat.<br />
