The slips or ballots bearing the names were passed by the
alderman 'to the mayor who verified the slips and passed them to the presi-
dent, who passed them to the'city clerk who also verified the slips by read-
ing them aloud from said slips or ballots which were then duly endorsed and
returned to the jury box.
The purpose of his presence with the board having been ac-
complished, his honor the mayor retired, escorted by the city messenger and
the committee above named, to wit, Aldermen Barrett and Perry.
