The slips or ballots bearing the names were passed by the<br />

alderman 'to the mayor who verified the slips and passed them to the presi-<br />

dent, who passed them to the'city clerk who also verified the slips by read-<br />

ing them aloud from said slips or ballots which were then duly endorsed and<br />

returned to the jury box.<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> his presence with the board having been ac-<br />

complished, his honor the mayor retired, escorted by the city messenger and<br />

the committee above named, to wit, Aldermen Barrett and Perry.<br />
