Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1989, the IUT Michel de Montaigne at the University of Bordeaux 3 has offered two different<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes: Management of Cultural Action (GAC) <strong>and</strong> Conception of Projects <strong>and</strong> Cultural<br />

Mediation (CoMec). Both programmes share similar aims: to cultivate the capacities of the students <strong>in</strong><br />

advanced thought <strong>and</strong> to analyse real situations; to develop their skills <strong>in</strong> anticipation <strong>and</strong> negotiation;<br />

to help them cope with the responsibility of manag<strong>in</strong>g projects; <strong>and</strong> to help them <strong>in</strong>tegrate <strong>in</strong>to<br />

companies.<br />

Programme(s) <strong>and</strong> qualification(s)<br />

The DUT <strong>in</strong> Management of Cultural Action (GAC) (DUT = state diploma).<br />

Diploma <strong>in</strong> Theory of Projects <strong>and</strong> Cultural Mediation (DU-CoMec = university diploma).<br />

Duration<br />

GAC - 1 year; CoMec - 1 year.<br />

Content<br />

The DUT <strong>in</strong> Management of Cultural Action (GAC):<br />

The Programme is a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> <strong>management</strong>. Professionals must be able to:<br />

- conceive of plans add<strong>in</strong>g value to natural or <strong>in</strong>tellectual patrimony;<br />

- promote contemporary art;<br />

- organise educational missions on art <strong>and</strong> culture; <strong>and</strong><br />

- encourage <strong>in</strong>ternational network<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> fields.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> subjects are: conception of <strong>cultural</strong> projects - tools, methods <strong>and</strong> theories; knowledge of<br />

arts <strong>and</strong> culture; the study, research <strong>and</strong> techniques of realisation; <strong>and</strong> professional practices.<br />

<strong>Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong>: between October <strong>and</strong> May, students undergo an <strong>in</strong>ternship of a m<strong>in</strong>imum of three weeks <strong>in</strong> a<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> organisation connected with their professional background <strong>and</strong> then tra<strong>in</strong> for at least eight<br />

weeks between 1 June <strong>and</strong> 31 August. The Programme total is 1,240 hours. The deadl<strong>in</strong>es for<br />

applications are 26 September 2003 <strong>and</strong> 30 September 2004.<br />

Theory of Projects <strong>and</strong> Cultural Mediation (CoMec):<br />

The Programme has two aims: to organise <strong>in</strong>itial tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g lead<strong>in</strong>g to the award of a Diploma <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> sector; <strong>and</strong> with<strong>in</strong> the limits of the programme, offer further tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to those who already<br />

have professional qualifications. It has four modules: the theory of <strong>cultural</strong> projects; the doma<strong>in</strong>s of<br />

<strong>cultural</strong> mediation; pass on <strong>and</strong> let know; professional practices + stage.<br />

Professionals must be able to:<br />
