Background, orientation <strong>and</strong> purpose<br />

The Humanities Polytechnic is an <strong>in</strong>stitute of higher education offer<strong>in</strong>g study <strong>in</strong> the fields of Youth<br />

Work <strong>and</strong> Recreation, Cultural Management <strong>and</strong> Production, <strong>and</strong> Sign Language Interpretation.<br />

Humanities Polytechnic works as a network based on the co-operation of 10 colleges located around<br />

F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>. It <strong>in</strong>corporates a virtual campus, benefit<strong>in</strong>g from modern education <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

technology. The core areas for assessment are plann<strong>in</strong>g, social skills, evaluation skills <strong>and</strong> media<br />

technology skills. The aim is to <strong>in</strong>tegrate these skills <strong>in</strong> such a way as to support students’<br />

development <strong>in</strong> their field. The student <strong>in</strong> the Humanities Polytechnic is self-directed, goal-oriented<br />

<strong>and</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dependent th<strong>in</strong>ker. Each student draws up a personal study plan. The modes of study vary<br />

from classroom teach<strong>in</strong>g, book exams, project work<strong>in</strong>g, work practice to virtual studies. The student is<br />

allowed considerable freedom of choice accord<strong>in</strong>g to his personal learn<strong>in</strong>g style, scope of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>and</strong><br />

previous experience.<br />

Bachelor’s degree <strong>in</strong> Cultural Management <strong>and</strong> Production.<br />

Duration<br />

3-1/2 years.<br />

Content<br />

The programme provides the student with a broad-based expertise <strong>in</strong> the adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>and</strong><br />

production of recreational <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> services. It tra<strong>in</strong>s the student to organise <strong>and</strong> run <strong>cultural</strong> work<br />

<strong>in</strong> community groups <strong>and</strong> the third sector, <strong>and</strong> to motivate people to take part <strong>in</strong> a variety of<br />

recreational <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> activities, both <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational field. The degree programme<br />

consists of 140 credits (210 ECTS) <strong>and</strong> runs <strong>in</strong> a modularised structure. Each theme covers 5 credits<br />

which the student can choose accord<strong>in</strong>g to his or her own <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>and</strong> specialisation. Compulsory<br />

themes are:<br />

- Orientation <strong>in</strong> the field of <strong>management</strong>;<br />

- Digital skills;<br />

- Humanism;<br />

- Communication <strong>and</strong> dialogue <strong>in</strong> society;<br />

- Arts <strong>and</strong> culture <strong>in</strong> society A+B;<br />

- Contents of arts <strong>and</strong> culture A+B;<br />

- Cultural work<strong>in</strong>g environment A+B; <strong>and</strong><br />

- Work placement (20-60 credits).<br />

Optional themes <strong>in</strong> production (e.g.):<br />

- Communication A+B;<br />

- Entrepreneurship;<br />

- Cultural production <strong>in</strong> the third sector;<br />
