Content<br />

This well-established programme offers a wide range of specialisms which reflect the Department's<br />

research <strong>in</strong>terests. It is designed to build on academic qualifications <strong>and</strong> dance experience acquired at<br />

undergraduate level, but is also aimed at dance professionals wish<strong>in</strong>g to extend <strong>and</strong> deepen their<br />

knowledge <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of dance. The dissertation dist<strong>in</strong>guishes the Masters programme from<br />

the diploma.<br />

The modular framework requires all taught postgraduate students <strong>in</strong> Dance Studies <strong>and</strong> Music &<br />

Sound Record<strong>in</strong>g to undertake a double module entitled Research Sem<strong>in</strong>ar: Theory <strong>and</strong> Methods (30<br />

credits), <strong>and</strong> three subject options (30 credits each). At this stage students may be awarded a<br />

Postgraduate Diploma on satisfactory completion of the required modules. To ga<strong>in</strong> a Masters<br />

qualification, students will be expected to complete a dissertation project (60 credits).<br />

Research Sem<strong>in</strong>ar:<br />

Theory <strong>and</strong> Methods (Interdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary) This module is designed to develop advanced research skills;<br />

part of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary, with sem<strong>in</strong>ars on methodology applicable for all students <strong>in</strong><br />

Dance Studies <strong>and</strong> Music & Sound Record<strong>in</strong>g. Students will be <strong>in</strong>troduced to research resources <strong>and</strong><br />

current trends <strong>in</strong> the perform<strong>in</strong>g arts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g dance, musicology, physical theatre <strong>and</strong> performance,<br />

as preparation for work lead<strong>in</strong>g to presentation of a conference-style paper. Assessment is based upon<br />

the paper presented, <strong>and</strong> on an extended review of recent research issues.<br />

-Dance Anthropology: Theory <strong>and</strong> Fieldwork<br />

-Laban Movement Analysis <strong>and</strong> Current Body Practices<br />

-Construct<strong>in</strong>g Dance Histories<br />

-Danc<strong>in</strong>g from Street to Screen<br />

-Dance, Multimedia <strong>and</strong> Information Technologies<br />

Assessment:<br />

By coursework for each module.<br />

Duration<br />

Full-time: 12 months.<br />

Part-time: normally 24 months.<br />
